I lived downtown form 82-90. In 85 Horton Plaza came online – that was a huge turning point for downtown… but there were seeds of gentrification prior to that – Art Walk had been happening, Sushi Gallery. Live/work artists lofts were starting to happen. But the catalyst was Horton Plaza which opened in 1985. Restaurants and bars followed.
You act like a declined seedy downtown that gets gentrified was unique to San Diego in the 80’s and happened just because people moved to North County. Huh? Downtown was already revitalized before the condo towers and ball park… And gentrifications of downtowns happened in downtowns across the country… Baltimore, Chicago, Los Angeles. This type of stuff happens. Look at Old City in Philly – it was seedy and run down until it got gentrified. In fact most of Center City was hurting except Society Hill and Rittenhouse – until it got gentrified in the 80’s and 90’s.
I have to agree with BG that you often toss out statements that are potentially inaccurate – but more relevant – they are arrogant.
As I said in another thread… I am happy that you had a perfect childhood in an idylic setting and now have an exceptional life in North County. But you come across like anything different than the opportunities and choices you’ve made are inferior. You may not realize just how elitist you come off as. I’m sure you are a wonderful person, but truthfully – you often come across as an ass. You can be happy about your success and background without slamming those who have different success and different backgrounds. Try it.
