Jim, there are millions of Americans living abroad and they do so because they can enjoy a pretty good living.
In foreign countries, the police will give Americans better protection than their own citizens; because they know that if something happens to an American, our State Department comes down hard on them.
Go to any country where is there an American presence or American tourists. Americans celebrate the 4th of July just fine. Hotels have special events for Thanksgiving and Christmas. They even celebrate Halloween.

Next time I am playing the role of an expat I will make sure to ask the hotel staff to take down the local nations flag on the 4th of July and raise the American one so I am not offended. I will make sure to pass along the anecdotal evidence you placed in this post to convince them that it is the right thing to do.
