This article is pretty optimistic. It looks like most people won’t have a problem getting or maintaining insurance:

TheBreezeParticipantIs it really bad luck if a house in a known fire zone burns down? I would characterize that as probable.
As for FEMA, I’d prefer the government didn’t get involved in helping people rebuild in known disaster zones. Just as I don’t want to subsidize the building of homes below sea level in New Orleans, I also don’t want to subsidize the building of tinderbox houses every four years in fire-prone areas.

TheBreezeParticipantThe weather guy said this stuff is staying around because the wind is swirling — it’s not blowing out to sea and it’s not blowing inland. Plus, that doctor dude on CNN said the tiniest particles carry way up in the atmosphere and will slowly cascade down over the next 4 to 5 weeks. So it’s likely that the air will be less than ideal for quite a while yet.

TheBreezeParticipantI’m not sure that clearing brush/creating fire breaks would be the answer in any event. All an arsonist would have to do is light the fire on both sides of the break. I heard that the main problem in this case was either lack of water planes in the air or inability to get planes in the air due to the wind. Hopefully the magnitude of this fire will spur the county/state/federal government to buy more planes.
If clearing brush is an answer, I say raise property taxes so that the county can pay people who want to do it. My job pays better than what I could make as a brush clearer and I’m sure a single skilled dozer operator could do the job much better than 10 people with skills similar to mine.
But again though, feel free to get started on the job yourself. I have much more respect for people who lead by example than those who volunteer others to do something they want done.

TheBreezeParticipantI just saw on CNN that the particulates will stay around for 4-5 weeks. I hope I don’t continue to fill this crappy for an entire month. Damn this sucks. I wonder how much the lung cancer rate is going to go up for San Diegans?
