I agree with others who stated that it’s not the noise that I would be worried about but the impact on health.
Also, I live about 1/2 mile from the 5 and I definitely have white noise this far away and it is worse at night. I like to pretend it’s the ocean. ;)
Is the health factor strictly proximity to the freeway? The house we are looking at is high on a hill 2 blocks from the freeway. So yes the noise travels up the hill but does the pollution and health hazards do the same?
I could see the health hazard of living level to the highway or slightly above it but when you are a significantly higher maybe its not as bad?

Our place in Temecula backs to a park, so day and night we hear nothing but birds and crickets. It’s awesome, and now that we’ve lived with noise and without, we wouldn’t even consider a house by a freeway.
You may be far happier with several hundred fewer square feet in a quiet area.
20 places in 25yrs! wow
You maybe right about living in smaller place away from the highways is ideal.
What weve come across in the last 6 months is far worse (house wise) than this one near the 8 freeway.
In our price range we see major fixers or houses on busy streets or houses in neighborhoods with bad schools. This home is in a great neighborhood, in a cul de sac and is 75% remodeled.
Am I talking myself into this??rent4nowParticipant
Between my wife and I, we’ve lived in 20 or so different places in the last 25 years, many of them close to major roads. Two years ago my wife and I bought a house that is on a hill several blocks North of the 56 in Carmel Valley. My wife was paranoid about freeway noise, and we went back to the house several times during the day, and it was within my wife’s tolerable limits. This was in mid-October. After we moved in, we discovered that the worst noise is at night, when it is cold and the noise travels farther. Especially at this time of the year. Even though the traffic is lighter at night, the noise given off is greater. Visit the neighborhood of the house sometime around 11pm, park on the street near the house in question, turn off your engine. Roll down your windows or better yet get out. That will give you a sense of how bad it can get.
Thats a good idea about going late at night. I did not consider that. We have been to the house during the day and during evening traffic hour.
The house is on a pretty steep lot overlooking the north with views of Mt soledad to the nw and cowles to the ne. We are the 2nd street up from the 8 so about 200-300 ft from the onramp but way above the highway. We will go there again and this time sit inside and observe with the windows open and closed.
Right now we deal with the flight path noise so we figure it cant be much worse. Although the plane noise is not constant, when a plane does fly over you have to pause the movie or conversation for 15 seconds.rent4nowParticipant
Here’s some wacky advice, but well worth it in my mind.
