I saw a couple of episodes of This Old House where they put up a prefab timber frame. The savings come from the short construction time, especially on-site, but it was quality construction, better than any tract home in SoCal, so i’m sure the construction materials didn’t make it cheap. Also only the walls and roof were constructed offsite, the finishing all had to be done onsite.

jameswennParticipant

that factor would keep me out of La Mesa / San Carlos / etc if I had to commute I-8 east between 4 and 6 PM everyday
I’ve never seen I-15 north NOT be like that north of Mira Mesa Blvd regardless of the time of day so any housing north of there is of zero interest to me – likewise for I-5 north of the merge
life is too short to sit in traffic
There are people who get to leave work before 5:30? Lucky! π
Government jobs, that’s practically half the workforce in San Diego

jameswennParticipantSince you’re coming from the east, I hope you don’t think downtown SD is like Manhattan. Try renting first to see if you like it. I’m in UTC and I have neighbors in my building that were in Downtown but relocated. They said they had to keep leaving the area, because all the stores they needed were elsewhere so they were always driving to Hillcrest or elsewhere.
