Sorry – thought you were talking true home automation, you mean home theater / sound / lighting…. Yeah that stuff rocks. I built a very state of the art theater system here in Wisconsin and will be taking all the major components with me to Coronado… Will not leave it for the people who (I hope) will buy the house, but will put in more normal less expensive used equip…

cyphireParticipantBeing a radical computer guy, I’ve been disappointed for years over home automation…. It’s hugely expensive for what you get, it never actually works as promised, and it usually just complicates your life…
I decided that a few years ago I would develop a system which responded to my voice commands (like the Enterprise!), but after examining the market and realizing that it’s a tiny tiny market mostly dominated by insanely overpriced vendors (mostly on the installation and service) that it would never amount to more than a rich mans toy (a toy that never gets used).
Of course some stuff like automatic blinds (sometimes), and theater controls are awesome, but the rest of it doesn’t ever seem to get used – of course I could be wrong.
Microsoft showed off the home automation house years ago and quickly exited it…

cyphireParticipantThanks pemeliza! Yeah – I think that the good deals these days are in getting an excellent location without any of the negatives which people were willing to overlook during the bubble (such as bad locations, busy areas, commercial properties near, by a school, by a busy street, etc.) and getting it at a market or reasonably well priced price. Although I think in general we still have a huge way to go down, I wasn’t willing to sit on the sidelines for 8 years and then buy to save 30-40%… Thanks for the comment!
