Thank you, Rich!!!
No, they matter ALL THE TIME! And that’s how we should ALL be thinking. They matter a great deal. People are having to choose between buying food or driving to their jobs – those that are fortunate enough to have jobs, that is.
Note that the people having to make these choices are of all political persuasions. We are from all parts of the country, we come from different educational and cultural backgrounds, and we are all facing different challenges.
But the one thing that we have in common is that we’re part of a huge middle class that is being negatively affected by economic forces, and we have to find a way to deal with it.
The last thing we need to be doing is splitting into factions and battling each other on stuff like this. It is not only unhelpful, it is destructive. It distracts us from the tasks at hand, and is demoralizing in the process. WE aren’t the enemy.
Cripes! When does it end?!

January 16, 2012 at 5:00 AM #735967BubblesitterParticipantThe geopolitical oil wildcard is now in play this year.
US just signed into law very tough sanctions targeting the Iranian Central bank, making it much more difficult for Iran to sell oil.
Last week the EU also imposed tough sanctions, curtailing Iranian Oil purchases.
Iran is threating US Navy in Straits of Hormuz, and warning Arab nations not to “fill the gap” in reduced global supplies. Charges and counter charges of covert war, assasinations and assasination attempts.
The EU and US sanctions really start taking a bite in about 6 months, during peak summer driving season.
Iranians may not have much to lose by trying to block Strait of Hormuz, if they can’t sell much oil anyway.
Will an oil shock put US in recession? How will it ripple thru economy? Housing impact?
It will be an interesting year in Oil geopolitics, may impact us all.

January 16, 2012 at 8:21 AM #735972The-ShovelerParticipantWe can’t seem to catch a break although I think there was a recession on the way already in most of the world (just look at Europe and the slowdown in Asia) that would have gotten to us anyway.
Since the contraction was already underway anyway and they are already taking steps to boost supply. I think the price shock will be temporary and minimized if it occurs. But hey have you hear about the 100 MPG Ford !!! They should sell faster than the Prius in 2008.
February 14, 2012 at 7:49 PM #738036BubblesitterParticipantThings seem to be heating up in Mideast. I put the odds of Isreali attack on Iran at 50% this year. Gas prices and Mideast tensions on nightly national news everyday.
February 14, 2012 at 10:00 PM #738039paramountParticipantArraya: Can we get your take on the current oil market with any predictions?
BTW, I was right on target with my oil price prediction for September 2011 in the $80 range.
I think we’ll see seasonal highs for the summer and that’s about it; nothing spectacular – not even close to $5/gallon.
The world economy has been stabilized. ECRI was wrong.
