Oh those evil foreigners. How dare they take advantage of our depleted currency. What should we do, bar foreigners from purchasing real estate? Should we blame them because our govt, fed and treasury have are inept?
Really?
Though it’s controversial, I think that the rights of citizens should come before the rights of foreigners. We should not lock locals out of the housing market because foreigners want to buy vacation homes here (and I would argue that other countries have this obligation to their people as well).

June 27, 2011 at 9:13 AM #706141anParticipant
I think that the rights of citizens should come before the rights of foreigners…
Like the right of citizens to sell at a higher price? Or do only citizens who are buyers have rights?

The government is not locking anyone out. Savers can compete with foreigners for the same property. They have the mean and the $ to do so, since they have been saving just like those Canadians. Why should government step in and tell who can buy luxury goods? $1M+ homes are a luxury, not necessity.June 27, 2011 at 9:13 AM #706238anParticipant
I think that the rights of citizens should come before the rights of foreigners…
Like the right of citizens to sell at a higher price? Wouldn’t the sneakier move be to allow foreigners to buy lots and lots of real estate, then criminalize that and seize it all back?
