They don’t because their agenda is not about thinking it through but rather self-righteously defending their own individual psychology inspired behavior behavior(not having kids or not enjoying it). They really act like GOD or at least they think they are GOD. I am not saying every body who doesn’t have kids or doesn’t like their kids does this, only the ones who are conflicted about it.

I would suggest the 99.99% of the population has not “thought it through” because what it means is huge changes need to take place asap and it would challenge our infinite growth is God ethos that has been beaten into our heads since we could walk.

Throughout history, people have had difficulty in distinguishing reality from illusion. Reality is what happens, whereas illusion is what we would like to happen. Wishful thinking is a well-worn expression. Momentum is still another element: we tend to assume that things keep moving in the same direction.

I honestly haven’t laughed this hard for awhile – the banter between marion and davelj is classic! This could seriously be made into a screenplay.

Does anyone have the feeling that if marion and davelj were to ever bump into each other in a coffee shop (both unaware who the other actual was) that it would be the start of a torrid affair.

On a serious note, over population, resource scarcity & depletion are serious concerns. I notice the following core themes:

science vs. intelligent design
conservation/stewardship vs. depletion/dominance
humans as one of many species vs. humans over nature
industrialized nations over the third world
facts vs. ignorance
restraint/we vs. indulgence/me
restrictions vs. freedoms
logic vs. emotion
reality vs. rationalization

The earth is ruled by physical laws which we all have to obey (theoritical physicists excluded). Procreating is hard-wired into us, but we are also rational beings. People should be free to reproduce, but also bear responibility for their actions. Over-population will make life miserable for a subset of the population, we can either mitigate this by acting responsibily on a personal level and also on a policy/political level. Balance is the key. If we don’t proactively take action, nature will (starvation, disease, war) until equilibrium is reached.
