If you are picked to serve on the jury make sure to volunteer to be the jury foreman. I did that about ten years ago on a drug case. Once we were behind closed doors I told everyone that we are not here to pass judgement on the morals (right or wrong) of the law – buying drugs – but that we are here to pass judgment on the defendant based “on” the law.
I could tell that there were a couple people who wanted to call the guy innocent based on some of their comments about illegal drugs.
We had two votes. First result was 10-2 in favor of guilty. The next day, after discussions, the vote was 12-0 guilty. We were done in a day and a half – because we passed judgement on the defendant and not the law.
BTW, the defense tried a variation of the OJ defense – “…how do we know that the rock cocaine taken as evidence from the defendant on that day is the same rock cocaine here in the courtroom today???” :)))
