I agree with SK for the most part. I got my puppy at 5 weeks, no problem with potty training. Some breeds are ‘cleaner’ than others. If you have any former urine stains a male dog will remark his territory. Like the others said dogs want to do good, so you use praise when they do so. Tell them NO or find another word/phrase to use when they do bad. Use that word EVERYTIME they do bad. My dog learned NO means stop what your doing, whatever your doing. I used it in a way that wasn’t mean but made sure she understood to stop. Like when eating a treat I would say NO and she would stop eating it, then say OK to continue, then a bunch of praise and extra treats. This conditioned her to understand what NO means. If she found a burger on the sidewalk and started eating it, I would just say NO and she’s drop it, if she was chasing a cat into the street I would just say NO and she’d stop.
Watch them all the time when you first get them and do like others say, take them to the spot you want them to go. My dog didn’t like using the same spot all the time might be genetic too much smell in an area might give away their location to other animals, I think. Good luck. I really miss having a dog 🙁
