My 2 cent. It is not the damn SUV people, it is the driver. Yes I am one of those folks who tires of people always blaming everything but themselves for their behavior. It was the car, the government, the market, my boss, my spouse, my real estate agent etc. What ever happened to personal responsibility?
If you drive a Hummer H2, like I did for a few years, there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, drive it like the 2 ton giant it is, not very fast, lots of distance between you and the car in front of you, and hit the brakes twice as early as you would a car. Don’t take corners fast. If an idiot pulls in front of you and cuts you off and you can’t stop in time, you will be ok and there will be one less idiot on the road. Point is, you can be very safe in a Hummer if you drive it like a Hummer, and not a Ferrari. Your only problem then is other drivers, and then you are still “more” safe than in most other cars.
If you drive a Ferrari, you can go real fast, hit the brakes at the last minute, take corners on a dime etc. But then you might become the idiot driver that cuts off the Hummer. Here is a car with a low center of gravity that can handle like nobody’s business. I used to have one (348ts) and this is sooo true. But just because your car is not a giant SUV does not mean you can not drive it like a dumny and kill yourself. I personally have seen more sports cars wrapped around trees than SUVs. Gee an SUV must have cut them all off.
And don’t get me started on Minivan drivers. They must think those are Ferrari’s the way the drive them. Hell has no fury like a soccer mom on a mission. God help you if you are in her way.
If people drive their SUV’s like SUV’s and their sports cars in a way that enables them to have fun but allows for user error, or SUV’s (and 18 wheelers) we all would not be having discussions blaming a car for the behavior of people. When it comes to driving, stupidity is an equal opportunity employer and can be found in any size or make of car out there.
