What are your favorite Rush songs? Mine are “Tom Sawyer”, “The Big Money” and “Manhattan Project”. That lyric from the last one about the pilot of the Enola Gay flying out of the shockwave on that August day is incredible.
Personal favorite among rock bands is Blue Oyster Cult. Thinking man’s heavy metal.
Top five would be: Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Rush and Prince.[/quote]
Damn Allan we have a lot in common. Though my dislike of communinism is less personal as my military days were spent fixing Avionics on B-1B Bombers, not out in the mess.
Now as to music, I always have Led Zep and Pink Floyd in my top. However Rush is usually right in there around 3rd (numbers aren’t important), and yet I am a big fan of Prince and he doesn’t fit neatly into my typical taste. Actually the 80’s-90s prince I have not checked anything out recently. I just turned 40 so this was big in my era and I recall feeling like Prince was sort of the anti-Michael. Outwardly dirty, playing his lead guitar, spawning many acts around him. Great mind. I don’t know BOC very well outside of the typical mainstays. The lyric that sits in my head though is “Time to play B-sides”. You have to be a certain age to appreciate that.
I have to say though sometime in May my 11 year old wanted to go to his first concert and our choice was Def Leppard/Styx/Reo (I think) at Coors to go to Irvine to see Rush. We picked Rush and man that was the best concert I’ve been to. Wow do those guys rock. The thing is I’ve not been listening to Rush’s music that much lately and one of my favorite songs from the concert was one I was vaguely familiar with Dreamline. Great song, in fact I’ll hit youtube and find a good live version as I am typing, it Rocks a lot more live than you might think if you’ve heard the studio version. Couldn’t get the concert version out of my head for weeks. We are young….
My 11 year old now has Rush as his favorite band, and you hear him in the garage banging away on the guitar trying to play several of their songs. He even recorded Rush in Rio onto the DVR and won’t let my other son delete it.
My favorite song is Red Barchetta. Subdivisions, Time Stand Still, is another one of those that reminds me of the BOC- B-sides reference. Spirit of Radio.
As far as newer stuff some of the System of a Down/Serj Tankian stuff sounds cool. I really like this “Inside the Fire” by Disturbed.
