I remember living in Minnesota in the 80’s, when the places that Minnesotans knew as “Sound of Music” stores morphed into huge “Best Buy” stores.

And us Minnesota techno geeks thought those big cool looking “Best Buy” stores were just “neato”

Fast-forward to now: I haven’t entered a Best Buy store in at least FIVE years. And most everyone I know has the same story for why they also stopped going to BB: there is some curse (or whatever) that causes most Best Buy purchased products to crap out within months of purchase.

Everyone eventually seems to notice this mysterious aliment that strikes EVERYTHING purchased from Best Buy: the crap just stops working WAY before its time.

I’ve been in social gatherings where someone spontaneously asks, “Hey, what the hell is with all my stuff from Best Buy seems to crap out within six months?”

And suddenly the entire roomful of people is chattering and realizing they have ALL had that same experience with stuff bought from Best Buy.

And then the debates, and rumors start. Everyone tries to explain this weird mystery.

Some people claim they have friends who are buyers inside Best Buy and told them the store bottom feeds and buys up (at very low cost) large shipments of inferior product models that OEM’s are dumping because of high field return rates associated with those models.

Who knows?

All I know is that something is UP with crap bought from Best Buy, because I sat down one night years ago and listed EVERY product (like a hundred) I bought from Best Buy. Then I listed how long each lasted before crapping out. NOT A SINGLE one was still working, and most had crapped out within six months of purchase!

That was it. I stopped going to Best Buy.

Oh, and need I mention that EVERYONE that has ever been foolish enough to pay extra for a Best Buy “maintenance agreement” has always regretted it, when the product crapped out and they tried to get Best Buy to fix it. Best Buy always has some fine print excuse from the “maintenance agreement” that they use to avoid fixing the crap they sold you that broke.
