One of the best things I learned about wine was from a very experienced sommelier. He said, “if you like 2 buck chuck, don’t waste your time on the expensive stuff.”
I don’t happen to like it, but I don’t poo-poo anyone who does.
SDR I too had to stop buying. I ran out of fridge and locker space. My garagiste shipment last week was 5 cases alone.
As to why some wineries build a following, I don’t think its because of the casual fan. Casual fans don’t fork over 500 dollars for Harlan, or Colgin, or Grand Cru burgundy. I think its because they make a consistantly excellent product and are very good at marketing its exclusivity and rarity.
Right now I’m focusing on buying older stuff. Dunn cabernets from teh mid 80’s, Barolos as well. I have just noticed that syrah has taken a beating in the marketplace and since there are many self proclaimed wine novices here, thats where its cheaper to start and still get good wine!
