This is all subject to change and might be cyclical, but with regards to sports… I have two boys, my wife was a college athlete, and I was good enough to play small college basketball, so the kids will inherit some of that and hopefully a little height so when I searched communities I took sports into account.
Check the records of Encinitas area (La Costa Canyon), Torrey Pines, Poway and Rancho Bernardo Vs. the two high schools covered by the Penasquitos area. Most of RP now goes to Westview HS, but there is a good chunk of the community still going to Mt. Carmel. Note that I don’t follow wrestling, so take my words with a grain of salt if that’s important.
Part of the lack of success in RP might be attributed to the fact that the RP schools are one division lower, and have less kids to pick from. I think RB will have another HS coming on-board in a few years which could cut into their talent base.
In any case, it seems in the power sports that I follow (baseball, basketball, football) that the RP schools are a notch below the other 4.
Eric Chavez went to Mt. Carmel though, and I think James Lofton’s kid went to Westview, so if the kids are good then it doesn’t matter what the school is. In fact I sometimes wish I picked a less competitive community, but it is what it is.
