I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If society collapses, I’d rather have an infinite supply of canned goods and clean drinking water than an infinite supply of gold. You can’t eat gold.
Gold is nice to have in relatively stable societies, but I can’t see it having much value in a period of chaos.
I agree. That’s why I never considered buying Gold.
In true times of chaos, bottled water, bullets, cans of food will be the currency of choice.

John, don’t forget that a collapse doesn’t happen overnight. You will need gold or silver for the period that PRECEDES the collapse. There will be plenty of opportunities to take advantage of, and gold may very well enable you to build that stockpile of bottled water, bullets and canned food after the dollar becomes worthless. I don’t know how long that period of time will be, but once our economy finally gives way under the weight of its own excess I don’t think we will be going immediately to a barter economy. Gold may be handy to have in the *transition* period before people actually come around to accepting that the future will require us all to start doing more things on our own (growing food, making clothes — and making beer! I LOVE that part!)
