    We are trying to get an idea if Carlsbad would be a suitable location for us to buy in the future. So I have some questions, maybe somebody here has done the commute or lives there. I haven’t really had many occassions to drive through.

    1) How long is the commute at RUSH hours between La Costa/ Aviara/ Eastern & Southern Carlsbad and UCSD (Gilman)/La Jolla (Prospect)? 30 and 45 minutes? less? I am wondering if the widening of I-5 has eased the rush hour traffic by quite a bit.

    2) How, or more precisely which schools are the best there? how do they compare with Poway Unified & Del Mar, if that is even possible to compare?

    3) We are a couple of professionals with young kids, so proximity to schools, parks, and shopping is important. We’d be looking for homes that are no more than 25 yrs old (preferably 10-15 yrs), at least 2000 sf, 4 bdr., yard, that currently are not more than mid 500Ks. Any suggestions for which areas would be better, and which ones to avoid?

    1) The commute is exactly 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Fridays are usually more like 45 min.

    2) The schools are great. Just realize that Carlsbad is split into three districts. 1) Carlsbad 2) San Dieguito and 3) San Marcos. The homes tend to be cheaper in the San Marcos school district so be aware of that. I know the general district lines but not well enough to list them.

    3) Carlsbad is one of my favorite areas and is great for kids. I think the areas you listed above are all great. I personally would choose those areas over the northern part.

    4s Ranch has 4 bed 1900-2100 sq ft for less than 550 (look for La Vina – saintsbury glen/ tallus or Garden Gate – calloway/snowbell/etc). Probably will get smaller lot there but will be an easier commute for you.

    Regarding schools, scores change rapidly. Some of the usually low scores are improving in areas like san marcos (fed by parts of carlsbad zipcodes). Keep this in mind when you look at eastern carlsbad.
