But that still prove flu’s point that $1M, although we all would be grateful, doesn’t go very far today in SD.[/quote]I’m not sure exactly what his point is.
Is it that $1M does not buy the ultimate house in San Diego with all the amenities that people might want? I’d expect that to be self-evident.
Or maybe it’s back to my point about schools and that some $1M houses aren’t worth living in. It’s a bit ironic that it costs less to pay mortgage on a house in many good parts of the county, than to live in a paid-for house on Mt Helix (supposedly worth $1 million), with no mortgage or property taxes, and send two children to a good private school.

I did mention the limitation of $ 1million earlier as well. my original point is that if you want the perfect coastal location at $1 million, there are a lot of sacrifices in amenities.
whereas for $ 1 million, one can get a place with good schools in north county inland with all of the usual amenities one would desire.
using $1 million as baseline, to move from locations in north county inland like Poway/Scripps/RB/4S to coastal areas, depending on location, we could be looking at reduction in 1000-2000 sqft, a near fixer instead of fully updated, a pool vs not, or a good 1/2 acre vs small typical 10k lots.
for a lot of folks, that means the 20-30 minutes drive to the beach is a decent trade off to get all of the amenities mentioned above.
