GuestTransportation in Singapore is great. There is no reason to own a car.
Taxis are cheap, buses and the subway are great. You can get from the airport to the city center in 20 minutes.
The EZ Pass/Fast track system pays for road tolls which are ajusted based on traffic patterns. It also automatically pays for parking in private garages. Auto traffic is smooth.
Singapore is one the best managed country in the world with a lower corruption index that the USA.
The government makes sure housing is affordable by building and selling condos to its citizens, competing with private builders if necessary.
Singaporeans are not peasants. In one generation, Singapore has moved from a malaria infested island to one of the richest places on earth (thanks to a confluence of good management, happenstance and being located on a major sea shipping lane).
Singapore controls one of the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world. They have a high savings rate and the people are some of the most well-traveled and educated people in the world. They enjoy frequent foreign holidays thanks to Singapore being a major aviation hub.
If you have not been to Singapore yet, go. Every one speaks English there (the Chinese accent is weird but at least you can communicate). Singapore today is not the same as Singapore of 10 years ago. A couple years ago, they completed a giant seaside reservoir to gain potable water security; and they built a brand new integreated resort that includes a mega casino.
Singapore, a gateway to Asia, is like a combination of Dubai, San Diego, Honolulu and Las Vegas. (It’s a missed opportunity for San Diego as we could have been the gateway to Mexico and Latin America).
Cars being expensive in Singapore is not bad. It’s good. It’s a sign that Singapore is attracting wealth from the region and the world.
BTW, Singapore is where Jim Rogers and his family relocated to. Major American corporations have their Asia headquarters there.
