Oh trust me, my company isn’t generally willing to see it, it’s just there are one or two instances of leadership that goes against the grain of the general wind of the bean counters. In fact, the company acquiring my company is notorious for playing the bean counting/cost game…That’s one of my motivations for leaving. And funny, not a single SMT actually tried to convince me to stay, because on a personal level, they told me that given the unknowns, it’s probably the better move I’m making (I’m not so sure but what the heck).
I’ve noticed that in this sort of thing seems to happen in cycles.
A company is in the growth phase (new product, new profits) and invests heavily in domestic resources….When things start to saturate and/or go into maintenance mode (with not much new growth), they start playing the bean counting game…
I think Walmart’s eCommerce is probably in the growth stage, so they don’t mind paying top dollar right now….I don’t know if that will be the case say 5-6 years down the road…I think a company like Intuit has reached that peak, which is why you see them trying to move more and more things offshore, though cost-wise, I’m not really sure they are saving *that* much. Turnover is a pretty big problem overseas right now.

Most Sr. Software Engineering salaries I have seen in the LA area in the range $100-130k or so…and there are so many companies here that do not want to exceed $110k, that’s with a laundry list of requirements including every hot technology listed in the job description.
The market seems really dead right now, my old company said they had 25 resumes in a single day for 1 open position, all the H1bs or the thousands of H1bs that are converting to Green cards daily.

believe it. disclaimer, it’s not just salary. It’s the total package, including cash bonus and/or stock grants.

That must suck. If you add in cash and rsu bonus, then Sr. Staff makes over 200k on average and $276k on the high end.
Also keep in mind QCOM is not the highest paying company in SD either.

July 13, 2015 at 10:17 AM #787940NicMMParticipant$200k annual package for Senior level software engineer is a norm at Bay Area. Google, Facebook engineers get $300k + in good years. Uber, Pinterest, those hot pre-IPO companies give hot compensations too and stocks are good chunk of them.
As far as I know, Walmart Lab was a startup acquired by Walmart. It builds all the eCommerce software for Walmart. It pays its employees well as other hot companies.

Then again, maybe because they are so profitable, they haven’t had a need to (yet). Well, at least in the short term, it’s great money for people that want to work there. Maybe for the next 2-4 years…or longer….

If they want to compete with Amazon head by head, I don’t think they will outsource. Walmart Lab is doing a lot of big Data analysis to target the customers. It is not just a shopping cart app.

A friend of mine has been searching for over 2 months in the Bay Area and hasn’t found anything yet. His skills are in Informatica and MicroStrategy. Another one I know is Sr. Java with 15 years and can’t find anything, a hiring manager mentioned that there were 50 resumes from Indian temp workers (who have creatively circumvented H1b laws) on his desk within a day for 1 open position…that’s where this competition is coming from.

I can tell you having had to interview a lot of people in my current position that the flood of resumes that are showing up in hiring managers inboxes are for mostly H1b individuals who have pretty low skill levels.
I’ve given a customized variant of FizzBuzz to some of these engineers with 10-15 years of “experience” and the result was something I would have given an F to if it was submitted by a freshman CS student. I’d say that maybe 1 in 10 is worth even bothering with a phone screen.
