ParticipantCirca 2000 blow off ?
I guess time will tell.
Greece, Spain and maybe France looking shaky again , now you got North Korea and Syria as well as IRAN.
If we get a bear then you may get your chance at the Move up property flu ,
But Ben will put QE3 into action at that point as well so most likely manipulated and muted markets.
My guess Apple will start to feel a lot more competition, I saw something that Google makes 2 Dollars per Android where as apple makes several hundred dollars per Iphone.April 10, 2012 at 9:33 AM #741367Coronita

ParticipantAlcoa released great earning and up >5% in AH. Will that and possibly other great earnings be enough to drive up the market through this earning season? We’ll have to wait and see I guess.

Yeah, I’m happy about that one. The only things I’m staying put in are alcoa, phillip morris, oil/gas like valero/royal dutch/bp.. Alcoa didn’t go up that much though. Just 5%. alcoa’s been trading between 9.50 and 10.50..But it’s got a big pool of investments from institutional investors. So I figure betting with those guys, if I get screwed, those guys get screwed bigger.
Meanwhile, I’m thinking of shorting Best Buy. I don’t think they will survive…The red herring would be a private equity buyout, just for the brand name…But if that didn’t happen, I don’t see how they can compete moving forward. Circuit City tried the small/kiosk like mobile version store strategy that Best Buy is going to try. It didn’t work for Circuit City, and with the going trend..Big retailers are going under left and right. Name one thing Best Buy can do better another brick and mortar retailer can’t do or that the internet cant do.

flu, all the stuff I’ve gotten from Best Buy in the last few years has been from their site. Even if their long-line PITA brick-and-mortar stores go under, their online site could still thrive. You don’t have to physically see and touch electronics, appliances and media in order to understand what they are and buy them. It isn’t like clothing or jewelry. I think the majority of today’s consumers are okay with purchasing this type of stuff online and taking delivery.

Give me any item on BestBuy online, and I am pretty sure I can find it elsewhere cheaper (even if you choose to pay the internet sales tax on other websites).

ParticipantI think it has more to do with Europe than earnings at the moment, But I think you may get a bounce off Alcoa as well if nothing else bad comes up. In the end I think they will magically find enough (limitless cash) to feed the monkey on their back in Europe at least until after the election or they figure we (the U.S.A) will be able to take up the slack, so any downturn I think will be somewhat limited as well (In My opinion anyway)
North Korea launches that thing could be a little spooky especially if we bring it down.April 10, 2012 at 4:52 PM #741414The-Shoveler
ParticipantFry’s and Wal-Mart can pick up the slack for best buy IMO, but interesting, I was in Fry’s last week to buy a 42″ flat screen to replace the 52″ that died, they seemed really happy to see me buy something (anything!!), had 3 guys tripping over themselves to help me, even escorted me up to the cash register.
Looked online but it was like one third the price just to have it shipped, so online buying big items does not work IMO.

I wasn’t clear in that one can take free delivery at a Best Buy store of big items ordered online. There is no waiting and they will bring it out to your vehicle.
All the items I ordered were small enough to ship free.

ParticipantIf you pay amazon $72 a year, you can get amazon prime you that gets you free expedited delivery within 2 business days. You can share your prime membership with 3 other friends, making the cost $18. And if amazon ever fvcks up the delivery, you can call them complain and they will refund your $72 for that year.
Well worth it if you are ordering a lot from them. And pretty much these days, if I don’t buy it from Amazon, it’s either Home Depot, Staples, or Costco.
I’ve gotten everything from amazon from car parts, to tv’s to computers to batteries to toiletry items to home items I needed for my rental.
I think the last time I stepped into best buy was to check out something, and then I ended up buying it elsewhere because best buy prices suck.

Now you know the wild card of how Best Buy could survive. In marketing speak its called serving the least common denominator -
