August 9, 2007 at 12:57 PM #72290cyphireParticipantIs true sdrealtor… From the friends perspective I agree completely – the lack of connection is definitely from only being here for 7 years. But I have made some great friends and connections out here so I don’t lack for friendship, etc.
When I talk about the shallowness, it’s mainly that most of the people I run into aren’t exactly into intellectual pursuits. I can only discuss movies with them not books… They think more of celebrities, than they do about politics.
I’ve always heard that there is a rivalry between Northern and Southern California. The funny thing is that the Northerners consider us to be empty headed bubblegum blondes, and the Southerners DON’T CARE what the North thinks about us! This somewhat sums up the problem that I have with So. Cal… If you want to talk about issues, about literature, about other intellectual pursuits, this place is brain damaged and empty… Devoid of life. Is this the case with everyone here? Of course not! But the sunshine and lifestyle breeds a relaxed – why worry – don’t think to much atmosphere. Back east many of the people I would run into would have opinions and express them, they operated at a more intellectual level. When I lived in Carmel Valley (as well as here in Bird Rock) I was amazed at how many people just don’t think about politics, religion, books, and world issues… couldn’t give a crap! Cars, wine, and relaxing seem to be the important issues.
I’m afraid for my kids… At least when I grew up you couldn’t stay outside all the time, there was time for holing up and reading, and talking (about something other than getting a new cell phone).

I think what you speak of happens everywhere and is more a sign of the times. Where I grew up (a very nice place back East) people are far more into image and pretentiousness than here. I left over a decade ago because of the attitudes you mention as being here. Back East it seems like everyone has an angle, everyone thinks they are somebody important and everyone thinks the world ends beyond the Northeast corridor. I find people much more worldly and well traveled here. Back East, traveling is heading to Florida for some sun or a Carnival Cruise.Growing up back East you had decades to filter out the nitiwts and to find your place there. What you are looking for is here, I just suspect that you havent looked for it in the right places.

August 9, 2007 at 2:43 PM #72384cyphireParticipantCould be… I think you can probably find interesting people and cultured people everywhere… I just think that the pickings are somewhat slimmer here…!
On the pretentiousness aspect, you might be right or not. I am not pretentious and when I see it (or don’t see it) I just ignore it. It’s very hard to snub someone when they don’t either don’t recognize it or just don’t care!
Often in NY I got dropped quickly when I wouldn’t buy into someones bullsh_t!
Whoops a Ferrari just went by my office really quickly… All the girls in sunglasses just swooned!

August 10, 2007 at 1:28 AM #72650CardiffBaseballParticipantI was the one who first mentioned entertainment dollar types do retire here, and I clearly stated that I didn’t think it meant they’d keep the market afloat.
I am just saying even an ordinary pitcher who sits in a bullpen for 12 years probably amassed some serious cash along the way. Wells knocked down nearly 60M in salary over the years, and while he might be done, he should be set for life.
I am not even suggesting that these folks will keep RSF, Del Mar or Olivenhain from falling, but that there are certain types of people who find this a desirable place to retire. I kind of doubt Boomer is looking for a “cultural” experience, or he’d have kept his family in NYC. Been there done that for him, and that guy loved NY (probably not for the Guggenhaim), but clearly seems to prefer raising his kids here. (at least in interviews) I for one don’t blame him.
