ParticipantI would strongly agree with Santee as well. Unfortunately it was hit pretty hard by investors when we bottomed at the end of 08. Also be prepared to get some tools out as you will be most likely fixing things. Still for the money and lot size it may be a realistic alternative. 52 kind of sucks during rush hour. If 300k is your top and you want a detached home I would think, Santee, Mira Mesa, Poway in no particular order. It will not be easy though. 2 years ago yes. Now a bit harder.

Participant
You can get a lot of house for your $300k in Santee:
http://www.sdlookup.com/MLS-100071537-11061_Crystal_Springs_Rd_Santee_CA_92071. . .
That’s a cute REO listing, DataAgent, and also backing into open space. Looks like a park-like backyard (could be partial gentle slope) on 1/2 AC!
saiine, I don’t know if you have kids, but the schools are pretty good in Santee and its only 10-15 mins (in traffic) to/from KM.
It sounds like you may be renting a condo. If I were you, I’d buy a house over a condo, no matter what my status.

Participantsaiine, residents of 91910 (Chula Vista) DO work in KM. I would advise leaving before 7:00 am and taking I-5 to SR-163 north (in dtn SD) as opposed to I-805. It tends to be about 10-15 mins shorter. There are several houses on large lots in your price range but they will most likely need work and are expandable. In your price range, the typical lot size will be 6,000-14,000 and the age will be 49-78 years old in this area.
I don’t think 91911 (Chula Vista) (in your price range) is a good investment unless it will be a rental.
