I took a couple drives through Spring Valley. It doesn't seem any worse than Lemon Grove. Near La Mesa it seems as nice. So why is it so much cheaper than even Lemon Grove?

Underperforming schools and crime.

Meth Lab Capital of the US (not that I'm an expert on that topic but so I've heard).

Hot. Check the historical data on some of the area weather stations through wunderground.com.

I was thinking about a place in Spring Valley for a very short period of time. Until I was watching COPS. And I don't ever watch TV. Some tweeker told the cops that all the drug dealers lived on Valencia st. Which happened to be the street of the one house I was interested in. But I don't know the area. However that pretty much was the end of Spring Valley for me. That and the schools.

About half, and I don't think I'm exaggerating, of the foreclosures I looked at had cracked foundations.

Nahhh! From what I understand Lemon Grove has the same soil conditions. It's the preponderence of meth labs.....

Of all the druggies tweekers are the worst.

In a moment of misplaced altruism, I went to a high school graduation in Spring Valley a few years ago. I've never been to visitor's day at a prison before, but I imagine that it would be very similar... fist fights over seats by adults, obese women in lycra, everyone in their Sunday t-shirt and baggy shorts.

I have a friend who lives in SV. He's an ex-biker dude and is pretty gnarly for a 50 year old. You don't want to fuck with him. He's found tweakers smoking out in a car out in front of his house and he lives on a fairly remote street. He's beaten the crap out of a few so they get the hint to stay away.

Not my cup of tea but I'm never worried about visiting HIS house :-)

epic post of the day!!!

"moment of misplaced altruism," I'm stealing that and making it part of my everyday vocabulary, love it!

On a serious note, while spring valley has it's issues, the original poster asked why it is cheaper than Lemon Grove? I have no good answer, LG has similar issues, but then again I spend about as much time in the highway 94 corridor as I do watching professional soccer.

Some parts of Lemon Grove go to La Mesa schools. It depends on the area basically and its nearness to La Mesa. There are also some sections of Spring Valley in Casa de Oro that are on the north side of 94, which would also be an improvement. That being said, like Casca's visit, it is not a place to live for the weak or meek in spirit. Due diligence is required especially if you have family or children who you cannot afford to send to a private school.

P.S. I am not calling Casca either weak or meek, merely agreeing with his description of the denizens of Spring Valley. In addition to lycra there are multitiple tatoos and missing teeth.

Well that answers my question.

I like the "misplaced altruism" comment. When I read that I got misty eyed about my home town, but not long enough to want to live in Spring Valley.

TG, you are too kind. Please take it, and claim it as your own, small payment for all I have gleaned from your posts.

Was that Monte Vista High?

It has 6/10 GreatSchools rating and 4/5 parent rating on GreatSchools.net. But, I guess that says more about the site than about the school.

Here's the most recent review:

E, in my best Ed McMahon, You are correct sir! Evidently they have not yet discovered the period. I can smell the unwashed humanity now, and the Mexican mommas who don't know when they're using too much detergent too. Still, it couldn't be that hard to be a top ten percenter there.
