What would happened if we all just quit

I'm reading more and more about the failing of our systems, the intrusion of government into private capital markets etc.

I have a question for you all: What do you think would happen if we all slowly stopped paying our bills?

Imagine the shock to the banking system if, even if only for just one month, every single person with a mortgage did not send in their payment. Or if every credit card holder sent it just the monthly minimum. Would this have an impact? Would this send a message?

I think I just scratched USC off the list of potential schools for my children.

Oh come on...I'm pondering

Submitted by Enorah on December 5, 2007 - 2:32pm.

I ask myself those kinds of questions all the time.

What would happen if we all stopped paying taxes?

What would happen if we all stopped voting?

What would happen if we all stopped going to work?

Our reality would evolve.

It would bring world peace.

What message? That we're all deadbeats who can't be trusted with other people's money.

Submitted by Trojan4Life on December 5, 2007 - 2:38pm.

I think it's bigger than that, BoF.

I think there's more to life than this crazy rat race we've made it into. I'm 41 y/o, getting ready to retire from a military career and have a lucrative job lined up as a consultant. Still, I have to wonder, is this the way we're supposed to be living life?

I'm just wondering what it would take to grab corporate america and our govt. by its collective testicles and say "Hey, let's get back to some fundamentals here!"

I just couldn't bear to see this thread dropping like a rock on the active forum list...I have an emotional attachment to it.

Submitted by FormerSanDiegan on December 5, 2007 - 3:31pm.

OK, I'll play along.

We have bills because of either a good or service that we selected, purchased or otherwise signed up for.

If one does not pay, it is theft.

I think I became fully conscious of my obligation for paying for stuff that I wanted to buy at about 8 years old.

This is quite simple for me ...
You have every right to live whatever frugal, self-sustaining, (hermit in the forest) lifestyle you want. But if you want something from someone you have to either barter for it, pay for it, or convince them to give it to you for free.

Ok, I'm a broken man now...I need a beer

Submitted by FormerSanDiegan on December 5, 2007 - 3:40pm.

Are you going to pay for the beer or do you expect those evil fascist brewing companies to give it to you for free ?

Just kidding, I understand your rat race comment. Making a conscious effort to reduce/simplify life is a good thing IMO.
However, one of your suggestions is exactly what financial companies want you to do to maximize their profits ...

Or if every credit card holder sent it just the monthly minimum. Would this have an impact?

Submitted by Trojan4Life on December 5, 2007 - 3:45pm.

I'd like to learn how to brew my own, I think that'd be fun.

I'm just wondering how hard that one-month crunch would hurt the banks...

Aren't these the kind of people who go live in a self-built hut in wilderness, and put only organic fibers next to their body?

Sex is their primary pleasure; there is no reason for birth control; so they have at least 10 kids who are raised off of home-grown beans and vegetables.

Not a bad life when you think about it-minus the 10 kids. :)

Trojan-
I hear your point. What you should ask is "what would happen if we all decided to skip out on buying gifts this year."

That would cause a very healthy reassessment of our priorites and values and leave us all few bucks to do far more valuable things.

Problem is that you can't get 'every single person' to all agree to do anything. This reminds me of those chain emails that tell everyone to boycott XYZ gas station for one day and then watch for the gas prices to fall, LOL!

taxes yes...

the rest, is fishy.

why? Well, for me at least, this Gubbamint is spending the hell out of MY money, and borrowing on top, on the most inane war ever. Sending MY money ( and more) to contractors at a rate that is so distantly high from what it should/could be, Blackwater gunning down whomever they please at 2k a day...

which is to say... i get toi pay and NOT ahev any say how it gets spent.

and

and

rant off

That's why I would recommend on trying to bend your taxes (not necessarily cheat).

Yes, it's probably not the right thing to do. But I don't see the point of handing money over to bailout other people's poor financial decisions either. Yes, I'll pay for road, schools, etc.

Trojan4Life,

Kiki here. i read the blog everyday but rarely post - i reserve this for brighter minds. but your question reminded me of one writer i like a lot.

Have you heard of the author Jose Saramago?
He writes really good books on what happens if ...

...suddently everybody went blind? Blindness
...in the next elections everybody voted blank? Seeing
...nobody dies? - people have accident and terminal diseases just do not die - Awakening

maybe we should tell him to look into this ;) he has the best imagination.

Back to your question - we see various attemps like this : not to use electricity for one day or one minute of silence .. even for good causes it never happens completely so i think is not worth even analysis this potential scenario

Just get rid of career politicians and things would be better.

Submitted by Russell on December 5, 2007 - 11:28pm.

Voz,
Thanks, my intentions are good.

Ever since I go that fortune cookie from Pick up Stix that read "you are delightful and entertaining" it has been slightly easier to be nice. I have thought about changing my screen name to "delightful and entertaining" but dinner was only fifteen minutes ago so I want to see if the fortune cookie magic is still with me in the morning before I do anything drastic. Anyway, if you see a new poster by the name of "delightful and entertaining", that is me.

Best wishes

"Just get rid of career politicians and things would be better."

agreed...

What if, we all had to do a term in government? Ie like the military draft, where all adults must serve 4 years in government?

Would that be democratic?

Buy Nothing Day is the day after Thanksgiving. I've been a participant for the last 5 years. It's awesome to stay in, do a puzzle with friends, read a book, go on a hike etc. rather than try and face the crowds at the mall.

More and more I'm hearing stories of people opting out of the commercial xmas also. This is the 4th year my family is not exchanging gifts. A little hard if you have little kids, but not if everyone's grown. Don't we all have enough stuff?

Trojan4life, you might check out the following link on the problem you're experiencing.
