From high point of my property I'm looking right over Alpine and can see flames. That's the same path it took all the way to Harbinson Canyon and Crest.

Rus I assume you are keeping your eyes open given the mess down in portero. I had a meeting down in Bonita this afternoon and saw that one from far away. Left there at 5 pm and went straight out to our friends who live in way way southwest ramona off of highland valley. When we were there late in the afternoon it was blowing but had died down as it got later...then shortly after sundown (it was hard to tell if it was sundown but it was dark instead of brown grey) the wind picked up pretty heavy... The thing that was kind of dufus was that these people said that thier neighbors went to the meeting in ramona today with fire officials and the prevailing opinion was that the winds would die down this evening... not the greatest assumption in my book. Then again there is not alot they could have done since there is not much firefighting you can do at night anyways.

My sister and brother-in-law in Tustin Ranch (Pioneer and Carlson) voluntarily evacuated earlier because they just couldn't breathe. She said a fireball landed on their condo roof and the neighbors aimed a hose up to extinguish it. Another relative walked over there from across Tustin Ranch Road and called us to report the complex was in danger. And the fire department roared in, 8 trucks.

I was in Ramona an hour ago. Westbound 67 was pretty congested. And that was before they announced the evacuation of the entire town. Interestingly, HVR was nearly empty.

Don't go there sightseeing. You'll make it harder for people to evacuate and you risk getting stuck in traffic on your way back. There's nothing there to see, anyway.

Unbelievable.The wind is ripping through the hills and canyons right now.
Not that it is the right time to knock people butI always did wonder how a fire burns from Julian almost to the ocean and then back to the dessert.

I can see the other fire too,just a glow beyond Lyons peak. Supposedly there is a portion of it coming north west. It is still pretty far though. That said, after the cedar fire I take nothing for granted.
I did call a guy who works for me now and then and lives near that one to see if he needs a place to stay. Haven't heard from him.I am sure he knows how to take care of himself.

Fox 6 news had a graphic earlier showing the footprint of the 2003 fires and how they relate to the current ones. The graphic showed how current fires are between the old cedar fire and the paradise fire and the harris fire is east of the Otay fire of 2003. It dosent look good, the amount of fuel there has been piling up for years.

Yeah pretty crazy stuff. I just spoke to our friends about 40 minutes ago and they are still able to sneak in and out to thier home from escondido via highland valley. I am sure that route will be closed pretty soon. I would agree with esmith, don't go sightseeing.

I agree Rus... I don't want to bang on the people in charge but I am not so sure that the afternoon assumption that winds will die in the evening during a santa ana is/was a great one. The engineer in me always leans towards worst case assumptions for design parameters rather then best case. Again though, what can you do right? Like I said, I do not know much about firefighting so I do not know how much progress is made during the middle of the night anyways whether winds are blowing or not.

What really sucks is that I would be both fires are due to some arsonist. (Okay that is a very speculative statement) How or why people get thier kicks off of that stuff is beyond me. Yes I do know Cedar Fire was caused by a dopey lost hunter...

Good luck to all in Ramona and other fire zones. They are evacuating all of Ramona tonight. I'm watching this stuff on the news tonight.

This is looking like a replay of the Cedar files from a few years back.

I just invited my coworker and his large family over to my house to stay. I better buy some milk! If you know anybody who lives out there, consider putting them up, I hope someone would do the same for me if I ever needed it.

Well, I know you are all talking about Ramona etc. but who would have believed the Northwood area of Irvine would burn? It's due to some combination of wind factor and the 261 toll road creating a funnel , and the eucalyptus trees are so flammable, and my siser's place is adjacent to Northwood. Looks like they're asking for voluntary evacuations of that area, and Jamboree is closed to all but emergency traffic. Luckily the fire hasn't jumped Portola.

My niece and nephew are excited about the pajama party at my place tonight.

while not an engineer but a part-ways man o science I tend to go w/ SDRealtor and the worst case assumptions, not making me to popular w/ the BTB as far as the current housing market...

all that aside, this is creepy... am at work and the Hospital air filtering system is lacking... the place is smokey INSIDE.

Looks like the Sheridan tract in Northwood has a house on fire. Other relatives that live at Portola and Tustin Ranch called to say they haven't been ordered to evacuate, but the house across the street has trees on fire.

Yeah, it's smoky here too. Enough so that it's making me woozy. Good thing I'm drunk.

Northwood is in Orange County, in Irvine. But it turns out the real danger is in Peters Canyon, on the Tustin side of Portola and Jamboree (actually across Tustin Ranch Road). That's just a small area and at first the news was reporting the problem in Northwood, but from what we can tell it's in Tustin Ranch. The fire is minor in comparison to what's going on in other areas.

The kids loved the pajama party. The adults are exhausted and were up in the night blogging and searching to see if the condo complex was still standing. Good news, the other relative called here early to report it was o.k. and the fire was stopped at the condo property line and has turned and headed towards Lake Forest in Orange County. The news says that Irvine fire is confirmed as arson. Meanwhile here in Temecula we don't smell any fire nearby and there are no reports of fire, but my relatively heavy patio chairs were tossed over and scattered in the night.

The Sheridan house didn't burn, the trees were on fire and the neighbors hosed it out.
