"Tax Roll 2007/2008 is closed"

So I've been following a foreclosed house for some time now, mainly because we used to be renting it. According to the SDtreastax site, the "Tax Roll 2007/2008 is closed". They haven't paid property taxes in a year and the auction was June 19th. Does that mean it's no longer their property?

I rent a house and have been following the home's property tax payments (or lack thereof) because I know the landlord is under significant financial strain.

I noticed today that the property tax is now listed as “Roll Closed” under the “Specify Amount(s) to Pay” column on the county treasurer’s web site.

I’ve searched for information about what this means (e.g., the repercussions), but haven’t been able to locate much information. Any information about what this means would be appreciated.

Hi Nacho -

Sorry but not much help for ya. Couldn't find anymore then the fact that it was supposed to go to auction on 6/19 as you had already knew. No new recording on the property thus far. If you are really really interested you should ask your agent to contact a title officer they work with and the title officer can give you the information you need.

how long after missing the payment does it go to auction? Does it matter which one as far as it being considered for foreclosure/auction? (April or December?)

nachoman, sorry to resurrect this thread.

I've been searching SD tax collector's site, and noticed a few changes they made. Basically, it seems like anyone who hasn't paid all or part of their taxes has their payment marked as "Roll Closed". Not sure if you can really read anything else into it.

The property tax year is July 1 through June 30. Assuming you found this comment July 1st, I would say it is merely notational to indicate the end of the 2007/2008 tax year. The next assessment year of July 1, 2008 to to June 30, 2009 is now begun.

a lot of time you have to use this site to get the parcel number, then enter the parcel number into the tax collector site
