Along the same lines, I was at the downtown Post Office a few weeks ago and in the line with me was a legal clerk with a HUGE STACK of legal documents to send registered mail, addressed to "ALL UNKNOWN OCCUPANTS". I was able to see a lot of these as the clerk next to mine handled them, and they were all going to Victorville. My best guess is that these are notices of foreclosure and they're warning whatever tenants/squatters might be there of the situation...
I see that chart and I get real scared about buying that place, and we're talking 2000-2001 price on the coast. I'm scared of heights and that chart just makes me dizzy. Like when it comes down, it's going to be like an avalanche leveling everything in its path.

The movie the Truman Show is a parody of modern living. Life is compared to a soap opera, where the allusion of the perfect world is re-enacted, so that real people can escape the humdrum for a piece of urban Utopia. The American Dream thus becomes a parody of itself, and becomes supplanted by illusion. This has relevance for so many of the new housing developments that appear to have been designed more for the front cover of a glossy marketing brochure, where framing the privileged viewpoint, conveniently discards the true physical surroundings. The fact that the Gardena photo reminds someone of this movie is very poignant don't you think? The Matrix has stronger parallels to religion, but is still focussed on life as an illusion, created by evil superior controlling forces ...I wonder who they may be?

I'm no expert and I don't know where exactly this is in Torrance/Gardena, but I don't think that picture is authentic.
It's probably just supposed to be a representation of the fact that every house in that Ghost Town of a Realtor's former dream is up for auction, but I think it was photoshop'd.
Look at the < a href='http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/04/24/gardena_village_006.jpg'>larger scale version. The front left sign should have a shadow and it doesn't. Also the little mound of dirt and grass looks like it's floating.
Then again maybe it is, and either way I can't wait to see the decline on those.
Yikes, so this is not in Torrance, it's in Gardena. Well on the other side of the 405. Right off the 110 freeway, just a stone's throw from lovely.... Compton.

I just visited. lol, it does indeed look like that.
Add 10k to budget. You would have to replace doors with steel and add bars over the windows. Look at it this way, your budding rap career would get a boost. It's almost straight out of Compton.
The area is actually not as bad as everyone is making it out to be, just the surrounding areas. It is right next to a shopping area. You can actually view the area by entering the address in google maps and select the street view.
This is just outside of Torrance. Torrance is known for very good schools and 500K only gets you a very old tiny shack there. I used to live in Torrance near this location. There are actually a number of good shops and such, but really this is an industrial area, and looks like it used to be/or still is mobile home lots.
gardena village
Didn't take the first time. Sorry
Where the heck is this? That is one dumb builder!
how many people are laughing now?
this picture must have been made by CNN. or is it a true photo?

I said this on another blog...this picture reminds me of the movie "The Matrix" or was it "The Matrixx." Identical houses with identical signs.

It's hard to believe, but true!

The picture must be "enhanced." None of the For Sale signs have shadows.
WaitingToExhale, I think there are no shadows because it's a cloudy day.
Starting bid price is still way too high at $500K for these homes. When the pain is sufficiently intense, it should come down to at most $300K max.

Then why would the trees and houses all have shadows? I want to believe....

I too have visited Gardena Village and it is the real deal. http://www.catalisthomes.com/auctionInve...

Looks like prices at Gardena Village aren't that bad for brand new houses near the LA South Bay. Convenient location. Not the best of neighborhoods.

Here's another update from npr:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story...
I still think it's funny people here at piggington, of all places, didn't believe it.
Thanks for the update. I didn't hear the NPR story. W/out radio lately (feel lost)
Can't believe they sold 18 of the 24 homes in 38 minutes and over 500k. Not a shortage of fools. Those auctions are frenzied.
