A new report by the U.S. Army War College talks about the possibility of Pentagon resources and troops being used should the economic crisis lead to civil unrest, such as protests against businesses and government or runs on beleaguered banks.

“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremist to defend basic domestic order and human security,” said the War College report.

The study says economic collapse, terrorism and loss of legal order are among possible domestic shocks that might require military action within the U.S.

The government has also been preparing for a tsunami and a nuclear war, but that doesn't mean they are likely to happen.

I used to design and write Navy wargame software. It was a very flexible system. I wonder if I could get a contract to modify a wargame that integrates some new "domestic" features.

I have heard that the same civil unrest is being planned for in London.

When are the police not preparing for civil unrest? Haven't you seen Police Academy the movie?

Civil disobedience, that’s not our problem. Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves, and all the while the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem.

The above is a great quote.

BTW, I thought everything is ok now - we've had 3 up days on the market. All kinds of good news.

The recession is over.

Even President Obama stated the economy is not as bad as he originally thought.

I hope they are simulating/rehearsing how not to use excessive force.

that's right. the only thing we Americans will protest is a blacked out game.

BTW: "Matt Damon lived next door to the Zinns as a child in West Newton, Massachusetts. Damon included a reference to A People's History in his film Good Will Hunting [Great Movie]. In a confrontation with his psychologist, played by Robin Williams, Damon's character tells him: 'If you want to read a real history book, read Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. That book will knock you on your ass.'"
That book is not going to show up at your local school so keep dreaming Matt.

Arraya, you make the point well. However, I would substitute, or rather add "running the country" with "owning the country".

scary stuff by the OP.

I called my local fire department and asked them if they are preparing for fires, floods, earthquakes, cats stuck in trees and trainwrecks.

Guess what ? They said they are preparing for ALL these events ... and more! They even said something about arson-caused forest fire preparations.

Scary stuff.

It had showed up at my college back in the '90s. Great book. Zinn's historical clarity is eye-opening.

By the way, the Pentagon and Civilian Response organizations write contingency plans for just about everything under the sun. During the unrest of the 60s all sorts of stuff was planned regarding mass civil disobedience.

During the 50s it was Nuclear War.

Terrorism has been the latest fad to get lathered up about. If you go back to most of the reports published in 2002, you'll read about how these organizations are totally unprepared for "ABC" or "XYZ". Insert the latest 'FOM' (fear of the month) into 'ABC' or 'XYZ' and the reports read pretty much word-for-word.

This really isn't news. Wake me up when the Mexican Tanks overrun Chula Vista.

Mex, the next "operation".

From the War College Report:

""Deliberate employment of weapons of mass destruction or other catastrophic capabilities, unforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency, pervasive public health emergencies, and catastrophic natural and human disasters are all paths to disruptive domestic shock," the report continues"

Talk about cherry-picking an economic implosion to play into the "Fear of the Moment". This report indeed covers all sorts of juicy doomsday scenarios.
