Ot: want super bitchin sink...

For the downstairs guest/public bathroom we don't have a vanity/sink. Former owner took it. There's a sink around the corner in the laundry room. We've been looking around now and then for a sink for 1.5 years. The price I'd been willing to pay has gradually increased to the point where I'd be willing to pay up to 3,000 if only my spouse could find a sink/vanity shed like.

Where are the super bitching sinks in San Diego sold?

funny you should ask...
I'm doing the same thing.

I'm thinking about doing a punch bowl with an antique bronze look wit hthe water faucet looking like an old well pump.

Pacific Sales is a good place to start.

We went to local pacific sales. Nothing sufficiently bitching.

She's willing to convert an antique vanity.

$3000?!?

Take a trip to Brooklyn, New Hope, and/or Philly. Visit antique stores and respond to Craigslist ads. Spend $500. Spend the rest of the money enjoying yourself.

Describe what you consider bitchen. Standard of Excellence has an outlet behind the Sears outlet. Some pretty nice sinks there. If you are looking for retro, Retro Renovations has links to hard to find old school bathroom fixtures.

If we could describe bitching I think we'd already have bought it.

Retro renovations sounds promising

been trying cragslist for 6 months and occasionally see a lead but haven't closed a deal.

Actually I'd probably pay 3,500 for a way bitching sink just to be done with it.

My sink would then be worth three times my car

Well, if you haven't yet, I'd try the Standard of Excellence outlet. Last year I found a pretty cool vessel sink that was curvy, not the typical round ones. And if you have money to burn, just bypass the outlet and go to the store. They have some nice stuff, but it's not cheap.

Go to European Bath Kitchen Tile Stone in Solana Beach on Cedros Ave and see Suzi Banks. She knows about all things bitchin, especially sinks, and has done tons of high end homes. 143 S. Cedros, Solana Beach, (858) 792-1542.

$1.59, buy a Sharpie, write Bitch'en on the sink.

Done.

Been wondering about vessel sinks for awhile... How do you like it? I've heard that it's more difficult to keep the sink/countertop clean because you can't just swipe the water into the sink. Also, heard that they can splash more. Are either true? After having one for awhile, what do you think of it, especially in a household with lots of traffic/kids?

Scaredy,

We looked at lots of sinks, too, especially those made in the USA. There are a lot of really beautiful sinks out there.

Have you looked at these?

Also, what is the general style of your house, both inside and out? Will this bathroom get a lot of traffic, or is it mostly decorative?

Hey, CAR, I like my vessel sink. I can't even remember how many times things ended up down the drain b/c they were on the counter and accidentally fell in the sink. I'll never have that problem again w/the vessel sink. The counter is not hard to clean.

I'd rather have a bitchin camaro

Maybe it's the user (me) - but everytime I use a vessel sink I end up splashing. I have a couple good friends with them in their powder rooms. Since I'm usually a hot mess anyway - I look like a wet hot mess when I come out of the powder room. Not a good look.

I would definitely want to try the model before buying. Not sure if you can do that at showrooms.

Don't come to NYC -- my last apt had one of those on the bathroom wall :)

Standard of Excellence closed. Is there still the outlet?

I'll setting for 1997 Mazda miata for $3k that I can gut and throw on the track without much more...
In fact, I'm actively looking for one, as a project.

Anyway, where else do folks go for good stuff around SD? Just seems kinda hard to find housing related stuff these days in SD.. Lots of stores closing, etc.
Not that I shop there, but Ashley at the Pyramid in Miramar is closing. Geesh they've been there for ages.

Apparently not in SoCal anymore. I guess I didn't know this until this thread.

We bought a lot of stuff from there.

LOL! Okay, that sounds like me, too, so best to stay away from vessel sinks. :)

They do look beautiful, though!

You're way more put together than I am, jp! :)

We need fixtures around here that are easy to clean almost every single time they're used. We get water everywhere, and if they splash more than standard sinks, it will get ugly around here.

Good point about not losing things down the drain. (But you can still wash your wedding ring down the drain...don't ask me how I know.)

Submitted by spdrun on June 23, 2012 - 6:00pm.

As far as losing things in the drain, no reason why you couldn't have a sink with a lip that's elevated a bit above the rest of the counter.

Submitted by svelte on June 24, 2012 - 7:51am.

It is something about the shape, but there is something about a vessel sink that makes me hesitate to use it - though I still do. Maybe it is that the lip is usually too high (thus awkward to get hands in there), maybe it is that they look more like art than a functional object, maybe it is that it seems like a shame to get them dirty.

But the last thing you want to do is discourage men from washing their hands. :-)

Wow. Doesn't surprise me. The HELOC train isn't running for those high end products. But last year around August is when I bought it at the outlet.

Mr. jpinpb had to take apart some plumbing in our old place to get my ring. Oh, I never heard the end of that. Very happy w/my sink. As I said, anything on the counter won't accidentally fall or slip in the sink ever again.

I think we will get a sink somday.

But it's going to be years.

Similar to the homebuying process.

Submitted by sdrealtor on June 25, 2012 - 12:21pm.

FWIW I dont like vessel sinks. There is always water splashed around them. I've seen dozens of chipped/broken ones. Try shaving in one sometime, its a nightmare.

Then again I am all about functionality in things and couldnt care less about form.
