There are no cities in the U.S. (in the top 10).

The highest rated U.S city is Honolulu at No. 28.

I've been to many of these cities. They are nice, but I still think there are places in the U.S. that are equally nice.

That list is an outrage. How could they omit Perris and Murrieta?

These lists are fairly pointless. Different people will place different values on the various aspects that together make up "best place to live". It doesn't look like they even included cost of living versus local income, to me that is one the most important factors.

I think San Diego has one of the lowest average local income, yet highest cost of living.

Never been to Zurich but I go to Vienna about every year. It's definitely on my top-5 personal favorites list.

What's your top-5 list? Mine is:

Osaka because of food and shopping

Vienna because of music and generally smart people, it's also a great base from which to visit Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

NYC because of food and nightlife.

Netanya because I fell in love there 10 times a day

San Diego to lay low and chill out. It's home.

Other cities which are high contenders are Accra, Stockholm , Tokyo.

My favorite - Vancouver, BC...just love it!!! Especially the skiing in Whistler.

I think you people are missing the point. Its not "Top ten places to visit". Its "Top ten places to live". Therefore, if you haven't lived in any of the top cities then you are basically not qualified to make a judgement. I for on have lived in Vancouver (number 4) and San Diego, CA. Here's how I would compare them.

Weather: San Diego
Jobs: San Diego
Culture: Vancouver
Outdoors: Vancouver
Air quality:Vancouver
Public Transit:Vancouver
Crime (least): Vancouver
Poverty (least): Vancouver
Infrastructure: Vancouver

The pros of american cities ( I've only lived in one) is there tends to be more work and they tend to be more happening (vague I know).

The cons of american cities ( I've only lived in one) is they tend to be dirtier, less safe, and there tends to be more extreme poverty.

The pros of Vancouver is its clean, safe, there is a good social safety net, public transit is excellent. Qualities that are typically shared by Northern European cities, Australia, and Canada.

Cons limited opportunities in certain industries (although the same could be said for american cities)

I understand your point about the list being for the top ten cities to live, you have a valid point. Vacationing/visiting a city can have a very different experience than actually living there. I have lived in four different cities, all in the US - Austin, Chicago, San Diego and Seattle. Of those four, Seattle is the best except for the miserable weather and short summers.

I've lived in Honolulu, Boston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Norfolk, Va, and have visited most of the major cities in the US, including Seattle, Miami, Dallas, Tucson, New York, Providence, RI, Chicago, Denver, Vancouver (I know, I know) Portland Or and Portland, ME.

San Diego has more of what I want, and is, therefore, better. What do you want?

I want beauty, culture/big city amenities(great dining, museums, live music venues, shopping), decently affordable cost of living, big water for sailing my boat, and yummy sushi...oh yeah, and sunny weather!

Chicago has great big city appeal, but has miserable winters and there is a lot of crime.

Seattle has pretty good amenities, poor on museums, it's just beautiful, but the gloomy weather can be a real drag - especially temps of 50 degrees in June. Also home prices are close to San Diego prices, it will be interesting to see how their housing bubble deflates. (Oh wait, there's no bubble in Seattle. lol )

I love San Diego, but the downtown area is "fake" and touristy, and just not affordable.

Austin is very affordable, but I would say overrated - it's average on beauty and just not as hip and cool as some people would like it to be.

I guess there's no perfect place :)

Priorities. I like where I live because my extended family lives here; because I surf; and because I need to live in a large metro area for my occupation.

I have no culture so I don't care about culture. I'm not a shooper so I don't care about shopping. I don't dislike poor people so living near poor people doesn't bother me.

Different strokes. I'd be better off financially if my priorities were different.

Been to the following in the top 10 and my impressions:

No. 2 Vienna - nice city but not somewhere I would want to live, it's just boring, the nightlife is around Schwedenplatz (Bermuda Triangle) and it's not so vibrant. And you can go to a concert only so many times! And besides you can also attend concerts/opera etc. in other cities.

No. 4 Vancouver - ok city but No. 4? I wouldn't live here, way too boring for my tastes.

No. 7 Munich - this is indeed a fantastic place to live, lots of culture and the city is just downright beautiful and of course the BEER GARDENS!!!! I would consider living here. Definitely not a party city though, more laid back.

Can't believe Berlin did not make the top 10...uh, what kind of list is this?
