"REPORT: General Motors to kill Pontiac on Monday"

Anyone want to take a swag at how much a 0-1st year depreciation will be when the entire product line is killed?

I wouldn't mind picking up a Pontiac (err Holden Commodore) G8 GXP at a huge discount.

What? Corvette is actually one of the few GM cars that I love and is class leading.

If this happens, I'm calling some dealers next week. If I can get a hold of a G8 GXP for the mid twenties or lower, it's a no brainer. Worst comes to worst, I'll convert the look from the cheesey Pontiac panels back to the way a Holden should look, and if I get bored with it a few years down the road, the engine itself would make nice as a donor for a kit car project.

*Edit*

Found 7 GXP's in San Diego (5 stick, 2 auto)
Found

Found 14 GP's in L.A.

The Z06 Corvette not only outperformed the Porsche 911 on the skid pad, but it's actually smaller (no, really, it is!). The 'Vette not only outperforms the 911, it does it for half the price.

That Pontiac G8 is a giant killer, too. A buddy of mine tried out the GT edition and said it screams. So, of course, Pontiac gets the axe.

That's stock too...Plenty of ways to mod that beyond. Though, I think anything above 400hp for me, and I'll end up wrapping it around a pole.

I'm preferring the G8 GXP because it's the only thing GM has reasonably priced with a killer specs that can fit a child seat.

I'm coming to a sad realization as much as I like the Audi S5, it's just overpriced for what it offers. It's a 335 performance at an M3 or C63 price.

Well, I'm off car shopping via the internet to help stimulate the GDP. Wish me luck.

That LS engine is a monster w/ mods. you'll never have enough HP. I though 300HP was enough before, but now, it feels slow, hehe.

S5 is totally overpriced. However, there's rumor that the future S4 will be priced similar to a 335i. They're also axing all the 3.2L V6 Audi too.

To be fair, Z06 Corvette costs about the same as basic 911. And it's not smaller. '09 Z06 is 176 x 76 in, '09 911 is 176 x 71 in. They weigh about the same. However, Z06 has 50% more horsepower.

Pontiac G8 is in interesting vehicle but it's just way too heavy. 3300 lb 335i with a basic $1000 ECU upgrade would hold its own in a straight line against stock Corvette (non-Z06) and leave 4000+ lb G8 GXP in the dust.

AN/FLU: Quick story about horsepower. My dad was an aerospace engineer for Ford Aerospace in Palo Alto. The building next to his was SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) and was filled with crazed gearheads. I had recently purchased a 1969 Mustang Mach I with a 351 Cleveland, but had also bought a 428 Police Interceptor block (with the four bolt main) out of a trashed Ford police cruiser.

Along with a friend's older brother, who worked at Penske, the engineers at Ford SVO built an absolute monster engine. Holley 600 double pumper on a Weiand Tunnel Ram manifold bored 30 over, this thing dyno'ed out at 430hp. I could smoke 'em through all four gears and went zero to 60 in about seven seconds. This thing would routinely stomp Porsches on the straightaway. The only car that ever smoked me off the line was a 1970 Cuda with a 426 Race Hemi running a blower. That just don't make cars like that anymore.

I think they (GM) still do, you just have to pay to play...

(Sorry Eugene, this thing would demolish your Z06...But's it's a vette too....Mmmmmmmmmmm.....)

No fat in the ZR-1

(conveniently out of my price range) Why can't GM sell that at 50% off?

Note to soon to be parents: buy a two seater before you have kids...Or after you have a 3 car garage...Otherwise you're stuck with porky 4 seaters with a car seat...

Ok, I really am going to shut up now. I think i promised ricechex no more car discussions on this forum. :)

that sounds like a bad a$$ car. 430WHP is a monster, but it seems like 430WHP is the new 300WHP these days. There's plenty of TT kit for my G making mid 400WHP now and w/ a built motor, a lot are pushing 500-600WHP. Pretty crazy.

AN: Baddest ass car I saw was a '66 Corvette running a heavily modified L71 427TP that turned out 625+ HP. This thing was stupid fast and could turn a five second 0 - 60 time. Dude used to run it out on Foothill Expressway behind Stanford University and a buddy of mine (supposedly) saw him humiliating a Ferrari BB512 on the straightaway.

As much as I love the German and Italian stuff, there is something primal about good old 1960s big block American muscle.

The new LS7 is pretty close of coming back to the craziness of the big block. I heard w/ TT, those things can easily hit 700WHP. I love the sound of the big block V8 too, but I'm partial to forced induction. A lot of the closed deck iron block I6 from Japan (GT-R and Supra) are hitting 1000WHP. Those things don't have very good 0-60 due to turbo lag, but they're total highway monsters.

I don't have a Z06, I'm too cheap for that. I have a loaded low-mileage three year old 3LT, for which I paid just under 30K.

I found that having kids does not preclude me from having a two seater. I'm alone in the car 90% of the time. If I have to take one kid somewhere, I can always put him/her into the passenger seat. The only situation where you really have to sacrifice is if you have two or more kids and you routinely take them somewhere, like daycare or private school.

AN: 1,000HP? Seriously? Dude. That's insane. Be fun to cut one of those things loose on The Grapevine, though.

When I was stationed in Germany, I used to run the autobahn on a Ninja 1000 and would routinely have twin turbo Porsches running right alongside. Fun stuff.

Those beast are totally insane, but you'll be insane to try and take those things on mountain passes. I personally think those are straight line beast and dyno queen. Trying to get that much power from a 3.x L I6 will yield way too much turbo lag to be useful on the track.

I bet it was fun riding those Ninja on the autobahn. I'm jealous. Wouldn't ride a Ninja myself, but would love to let me car stretch its legs to see how long it takes to hit the 155MPH limiter.

as long as you don't have a flat or hit a bird at 155MPH. Because paramedics would have to scoop you up with a spoon and your relatives would have to bury you in a closed coffin.

Some of them do...

Not that drag racing is my thing, but...

Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear did an episode on one such beast one time.

Skyline GTRs/Supras are pretty much a cult car in asia. Plenty of the older generations have been tuned above 1000hp. Hence understandably why the latest skyline available in the U.S. is so coveted.

Nope, I wouldn't be able to handle it.

Shit, Eugene, your relatives could bury you in a shoebox if you ate it at that speed.

We've got a 66 Corvette with a built 496. Its about 600hp also a Z06 with about 485 RWHP. The 66 is brutally loud, fast and uncomfortable. I love it. The Z is smooth fast and comfortable, I love it.

They killed the Saturn line, no deals there.

As far as I can tell, there are no really good deals in the domestic market right now.

I was willing to pay 29k for a 2009 LT1 Hoe but couldn't get the deal done.

Dealers are digging in right now.

I still long for a 1978/79 Trans Am Smokey and the Bandit Style.

6.6T/A, Radial Tuned Suspension, T-Tops, Golden Honeycombs with a prism dash board and of course flowmasters.

A replica was made, but I think it was going for ~120k.

I thought about buying the last year of the Trans Am (I think it was 2003) - but my garage is already filled to capacity.

Yawn. Skidpad is just one test. Like 0-60, it doesn't mean that much in isolation. Slalom time is a better measure. Or lap time. Even better yet, just drive both cars. I did. Did you? I bought the 911. Haven't regretted it.

If the 911 was branded as a Ford, would you still buy it? For the price of a loaded Z06, all you can get is a base 911 w/ no option. Z06 would KILL the 911 in ANY performance test you want to throw at it. The only test it'll fail in is the interior quality and brand snobbery.
