OT: SDSU/Cox Arena concerts -- BeerUser Forum Topic
Submitted by CardiffBaseball on March 10, 2009 - 11:01am
Beer sales is probably a stupid topic but with our strong San Diego presence I figure someone can answer a question for me. I took the kids to a wholesome christian concert at SDSU Sunday night --- Slipknot . On a side note, Jesus H. my head is still ringing.... Anyway I figured with 3 bands going a man of my size can handle 2-3 beers early on and still be quite the safe driver at 11:00 but the Arena was not selling beer. Never having been to a concert there, I just assumed it was because it was a campus event except I saw where they sell beer at Cox because it was on the board. I asked the guy he said no beer sales for Slipknot. I found that kind of bizarre, so I am curious is that common at these thrasher events where folks get a little crazy down in the pit? Or does SDSU/Cox ramp it back because a potentially raucous/rowdy crowd doesn't need any fuel? This has to the first concert I've ever been to where the pungent smell of cannibis wasn't present.

Actually I almost went to that show. Short answer is that I think its based on contract between band/venue.
Now I saw metallica there in Dec and there was beer. I saw tool there sometime in the last 2 years and don't remember there being beer.
And I remember that back in the day Metallica would not allow beer sales during due to a stipulation in the venue contract that would make Metallica liable for all the seat/bathroom damage if alcohol was sold during the show. They would not be liable for damage if they didn't have alcohol sales.
ok that makes sense because the guy seemed to suggest that no it was a slipknot thing. Maybe they didn't want the liability. I assume for the bands there is very little reward for a lot of risk with drunks out there.
Slipknot was pretty wild and definitely not something my wife needed to take the boys to. I'll let her handle the off-broadway stuff, but not this.
How drunk can someone possibly get? Last concert I saw there the beer wait was at least 15 minutes.
The bands probably aren't making enough off merchandise sales to make up for liability. One would think that's what insurance is for. But, the effort to find any logic or sense in large venue alcohol sales policies is a fruitless one for certain.
That is what flasks are for.....plus you don't have to shell out $13.00 for a no.57 Jack Daniels with very little Jack Daniels.
I remember going to a hockey game in Anaheim with two of my buddies last year and I brought old faithful. My buddies and I go to the bar and I get a large coke for $4.00 and they order 3 Vodka and what evers for $10.00 each. Their bill 60.00 mine 4.00.
We go back up to our seats and I pull out old faithful with the Gentleman Jack, not number 57, that I bought a 1/2 gallon of at Costco for like $35.00, lifted the lid on the Coke and made her extra strong at no extra charge.....ha ha ha...
You should have seen everyone looking at me and just the silence, and then people say, man, that is pretty smart.....no shit?
Needless to say my buddies are broke and I am not....
Cardiff,
I knew Slipknot was a Christian band....I just knew it even though they try to keep it low key....
lol
There's good money to be made in all things "christian". Websites, logos, bumper stickers, t-shirts, music, the list goes on and on. An acquaintance of mine is trying to start a website that sells his own take on these items. A bit annoying, actually.
It's nice of you to take your kids to slipknot. Did you know they won a grammy? link
Anyhow, let's fill our flasks when Five Finger Death Punch comes to town!!!
No they aren't I was being sarcastic. There are of course bands that are that don't make a big deal about it, but I doubt Slipknot is one of them. Wild stuff though, definitely different...
I took them to Rush last May, I'm thinking one per year until they can start doing their own. I preferred Rush but Slipknot was cool. Boomer (David Wells) was there. I got these tickets dirt cheap (sign o' the times?).
Concerts are so expensive, particularly the bands with a more popular following that get out (Eagles/Who/Stones/Police) so we'll stick to the second tier where you can find a deal.
Alcohol sales or no sales can be a problem. I remember way back when downtown, they were having like a Super Bowl party and Violent Femmes were playing in a 21+ show that was fenced off in the beer gardens.
Anyway, a bunch of rebellious underage kids wanted to see the show and so they managed to knock down/take down the fence and enter. They had to stop alcohol sales. The vendors sued the city and fencing company for lost revenue.
Cardiff,
I know, I was kidding.....
I just found out about some beer of the month clubs and have been a member now 3 months and enjoying every new beer i get i think if you like trying new beers you should join you'll get to try some pretty amazing brews.
