OT: Obama has 10 days left to liveUser Forum Topic
Submitted by Eugene on October 24, 2008 - 4:17pm
McCain's performance in the recent polls is dismal, and early-voting numbers suggest that democratic turnout may be higher than expected. Without some sort of a dramatic turnaround event, a double-digit loss is likely. To illustrate - Intrade will pay 7.30 to 1 and Bodog will pay 6.25 to 1 in the event of McCain's win. It is my belief that frustration over McCain's declining odds will push his supporters towards the ultimate solution of Obama's problem. I'd like to go on record saying that there is a significant chance that Obama won't be around for November 4th elections. What could be a good way to bet on this outcome? Intrade has a clause in its contact rules saying that all contracts are automatically expired in the event of a candidate's death. Other betting services may have the same thing in their terms. More importantly, most of them are off-shore. I tried to transfer some money into an off-shore sports betting company a few years ago and I had no luck, my credit card company refused to do that. There are regulations that ban domestic sports betting and try to keep US residents from participating in off-shore betting.

You're one sick puppy. I'm not saying this is out of the realm of possibility but why would you bet on someone's death?
Let's see...Republican supporters have been stealing Obama signs and caught on tape
http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-112664
A Republican supporter has made a false statement saying she was beaten by an Obama supporter
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/24/m...
And now you point out they are desperate enough to even attempt to take him out. Yes, those Republican supporters are the moral ones, all right.
Is this because of what you heard on NPR today? They were interviewing people about politics and one of those interviewed said he seriously thinks there will be an assassination attempt on S. Obama.
Hopefully the candidates' security teams have also considered this. I don't reckon anyone armed can get close enough to do it. Unless it's an insider grassy knoll type situation.
I sure hope this doesn't happen, IMO the consequences will make the LA Riots look like a family bbq. I think we might also have riots if McCain wins.
BTW is this why McCain will break tradition by spending election night in a closed room?
I sense history being made. Like I said before, I'm voting for Obama because I want to be on the right side of history. It's a once in a lifetime event.
Obama will be elected President on Nov. 4.
And yes, the McCain people are pretty desperate these days.
Why, is it immoral to bet on someone's death? It's not like I'm planning to off him myself.
esmith I usually agree with your posts but I think this one is pretty far off the mark.
Well, I prefer it when civilized, peaceful, people can discuss all subjects without piffling around, but esmith, you should know that not everyone will appreciate your position on this, and your raising it. Arranging to profit from a stock going down is considered aggressive but perfectly acceptable in polite company. Arranging to profit from a person going down, especially a leader who inspires millions is going to be thought of.... differently. Your bet is harmless, and may be well-calculated. Our discussion of it is also harmless. But I sure hope you lose this bet, for all our sakes.

Because he has family.
Seriously dude, don't be a douchebag.
I'm betting esmith will end up in the pokey between now and the election, duh. He might want to make a run for the border, TJ might be safer.
Notice how Congress spent NO effort to regulate banks, etc., but spent years to outlaw Russian music sites and blackmail credit card firms to ban spending on off shore gambling. (Note, when its banned its called gambling, when its in the US, its called gaming).
esmith -
I have had experience with on line wagering for sports events. Prior to the government cracking down on the activity, (which of course if you look into the lobbyist who greased certain politicians on this it is almost hilarious) it was trivial.
The common means of funding accounts was neteller. It was the cheapest and you don't need to do it through your credit card. Post crackdown it is not only hard to fund accounts but some sites will not let you set up an account. Pinnacle was by far the single best on line wagering site. Bodog pretty much stinks. If you tried to set up an account a few years ago I am not sure why you were not successful. The real crackdown did not take effect until about 2 years ago if I recall.

Not only do I not agree with your "going on record prediction but I will be more then happy to make a wager with you on your prediction.
I understand perfectly that racism, antisemitism, intolerance, ingnorance, and general hatred is alive and well, and even flourishing in our country. However I do not believe that some frustrated McCain supporter is gonna pull a gun from the rack off his pickup truck and shoot Obama at some campaign stop.
I think the "support" for McCain is not strong but can be better characterized as opposing Obama. Of those opposing Obama I believe there are two camps. Camp 1 is made of ignorant racists of which this country can do without. Camp 2 is made up of those that are opposed to his policies whether they are domestic or international, not because they oppose the color of his skin.
As f'd up as it is that we even have to worry about some cracked racist trying to kill Obama, I still have faith that it will not happen. Obama will indeed be our next president and we will move forward. For alot of reasons it will be good, hopefully an entire segment of our population who have been disenfranchised will feel as if they have true representation. I think that is good. I am much more concerned about other issues which I have talked about but tough break for me and I will deal with it.
All that said, I would be more then happy to take your bet.

Won't comment on the overall thread as others already have. Did want to say - that although I think Obama will win, if McCain has anything to do with it, there won't be an attempt on Barak's life. McCain, while not my pref for president in this go-round, is a very decent person and would never knowingly allow something like that to be a part of his campaign.
Why go off shore to gamble. We have had a very safe gambling outlet here. Buy a house w/zero money out of your pocket. The "house" (bank) fronts you the money. You stand to "win" (make money) in a certain period of time after holding by selling your house at a profit.
If you cannot make money, i.e. the house depreciates, you do not have to double down. You sit at the table for free, i.e., live in your house without paying a red cent. Eventually the "house" (bank) will insist you pay and when you can't b/c you're broke, then the government will assist you (taxpayers)
You can't find better odds in any casino anywhere in the world, in any horse race, dog race or dog fights, rooster fights or online betting.
Now that's sick.
Hoping the FBI will enjoy his post.

True but when that old, people usually don't have 100% of mental faculties and can easily be manipulated. I've seen some of the smartest people in my life get old and become victims to the simplest cons. I don't think Reagan was "all there" towards the end of his presidency and I certainly don't think McCain is. He has led a good life and deserves much respect for sure, yet I wouldn't exactly follow him into battle or trust that he can handle the stress and accelerated aging of presidency. If elected McCain will be the oldest president in US history.
My that was tangent!

Maybe if you post this a few more times, we'll get your point.
Why, is it immoral to bet on someone's death? It's not like I'm planning to off him myself.
Although I find it distasteful, I don't think it is necessarily immoral to passively bet on someone's demise who is in the public arena. Especially if it is the only means available to hedge their bets to prevent loss from said demise (eg similar to life insurance for key employees).
Also, those who have 401k accounts which own stock in defense contractors are indirectly profiting from death (not to mention the misery that some of the "sin" stocks impart)...
Why, indeed.
God help us all.
My that was tangent!
I think senility already kicked in. It could explain why he seleced a beauty queen for VP.
Seriously,
What kind of shit is this?
This really is beneath the decorum of this site.
And while I said it once I will say it again "Too many Obama supporters have been drinking the Koolaide".
To you really think he can change things that much?!
We are voting on two socialist. It just depends on your degree of extremes and neither are that much different in reality.
CE
my step-father wouldn't bet on it, but he does think that obama will be assassinated if he is elected. It's in our history that popular black political leaders have been shot. I hope it doesn't happen, I like to think that we are more open minded now
It's not unreasonable to raise the possibility that someone will try, but I do think it's over the line to bet on it.
And key word is "try"... I am sure the MIB (Secret Service) have had their eye on this possibility all along, and have only kicked into high gear since some of the recent hijinks of McCain's less sane supporters.
Looking at pics of Obama's campaign stops, there are always 4 or 5 MIB close to hand, watching the crowd. Having been personally at events with MIB "protectees" (what they call Senators, the President, etc) I can vouch that in such circumstances the MIB are everywhere-- on the rooftops even. At one event I was at, there were MIB stationed alongside the escalators and they visually scanned the faces of everyone going up them (including me)... apparently they have leads on certain people and they watch for them to show up.
I think it's pretty likely, alas, that some nutjob will try (may already have)... but they have a stiff, stiff row to hoe before they can actually get *to* Obama. I think many lessons have been learned since Dallas.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Law enforcement agents have broken up a plot by two neo-Nazi skinheads to assassinate Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and shoot or decapitate 88 black people, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives said Monday.
Actually, if there is an unsuccessful attempt prior the election Obama is probably going to win in the biggest landslide in US history.
i just saw that on yahoo and came looking for this thread:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081027/pl_n...
"An official from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said police found the men in the Jackson, Tennessee area with a number of guns, including a sawed-off shotgun, in their car."
apparently, a sawed-off shotgun is especially indicative of murderous intent. not to mention, sign of l33t ninja assassin skillz.
you have to be really close minded or naive or sheltered to think this is out of the realm of possibility, much less taste (to bring up as a possibility). but seriously, these clowns aren't exactly jason bourne stand-ins...
So esmith - who are your sources? In view of the thread I posted regarding the story I read about the "Maverick" who was plotting to assassinate Obama, you seem very suspicious now.
Edit - I see you posted it in this thread, but I thought it merited its own.
Yes exactly... those two guys sure seem like pretty bright guys to me.
Like I said, I will take the bet anytime.
