OT - Military Surplus Store - Marine CapUser Forum Topic
Submitted by SD Transplant on June 24, 2009 - 12:19pm
I figure the piggs would help me out with this quest. I have a friend in EU that's crazy about US Uniforms, and I'd like to send him a gift in the next 1-2 weeks. He'd like a Marines cap (size M). Is there a decent military surplus/uniform store in San Diego? I always go to gun shows for this type of buy, but there won't be one before until later this year (wrong timing for my intention). Moreover, would there be a store in a military base that I/civilian could access? (I doubt that - but asking the dumb question :) Note: it has to be a real thing (no baseball like caps)...a real uniform cap. I found one on E-bay but the wrong size

i have a hat stretcher (cheap device also avail. on ebay) that I used to stretch cotton hats a size or even two. they're really neat, because when you wash a cotton hat they often come downa size. I bet you could easily make that one on ebay a med or even almosta large with a cheap hat stretcher. a stretcher is basically two shaped piece s of wood with a screw devidce that slowly spreads them out and retracts. it's worth owning, i think mine was 7-8 dollars. i use it often.
i often wear a hat because im scaredycat and i am concerned about skin cancer.
Go to the cleaners down on Hill St in Oceanside. There are stores that sell Marine uniform items thereabout. BTW, Marines don't call them hats. Sailors and ladies wear hats. Marines wear covers.
quick search

Edit: never mind. You explicitly wanted Marines....
Oops...
Two possibilities:
1. North Park has a military surplus-type store one block east of 30th St. on North Park Way (one block south of University Ave. They have surplus stuff from europe, including Russian, Soviet, and East Bloc militaries, so is kind of interesting to roam around in. Finding a US Marines hat is a long shot, but possible.
2. At the MCRD just east of the airport, access via Pacific Highway, there is a Marine museum that may sell stuff if they have a gift shop, and next door to the northeast is a big PX that also may have what you are looking for. You can get on base by simply telling the guardhouse personnel you are going to the museum, which is pretty worthwhile in its own right for us history buffs, and it is free.
Not sure if they have hats but there is a Semper Fi on Miramar Rd. that sells marine/military stuff.
The store in North Park is called the Bargain Center, and I would think they would have that style of hat. At the least, they are very helpful and could steer you in the right direction. Another is Stars and Stripes in El Cajon.
many thanks for all the great feedback here. I'll try MCRD first
Isn't it the same as an Army BDU Cap?
I'd google for cap utility woodland.
