OT: McCain has Dementia

Let me get this straight: Osama Bin Laden is still at large, the economy is on the precipice of a meltdown, Russia just invaded Georgia threatening oil supplies to all of Europe, and McCain picks WHO?

Three years ago, this Palin chick was a small town mayor in Alaska with 9000 people. Now she's running for Vice President of the United States with a demented 72 year-old candidate who's already had four episodes of aggressive, malignant skin cancer?

I can't even begin to explain how demented this is. Did anyone in the republican party sign-off on this? Has the party officially imploded? This will loop non-stop on cable news for a month, same as Brittany and Anna Nicole re-runs. It cements the notion that the republican party has become a freakshow.

It's good for Obama, good for Democrats. Bad for America, embarassing, potentially disastrous. God help us if Obama isn't elected. This is just insane.

Introducing the new republican VP candidate. I understand she's quite the hottie -- er, I mean 'social conservative'.

Well, it sure seems to have pissed off the Obamanation fans.

Rip her for no experience, but what has Obama done? At least she led a basketball team, small town, and state.

Submitted by Ex-SD on August 30, 2008 - 8:28am.

Fact: Sarah Palin has more executive experience than Obama and Biden combined.

Fact: Governor Palin is a tough and accomplished Governor who has demonstrated during her time in office that she can get the job done.

Obama has been a Senator since Jan 4, 2005 and has spent much of his time since then campaigning for the Presidency. He votes (when he's present for a vote) in lockstep with Kennedy & Kerry: Two of the biggest, free-spending, bleeding heart-liberals on Capitol Hill.

Sarah Palin is exactly the kind of reform and real change that is needed in Washington.

Submitted by tc on August 30, 2008 - 9:23am.

As much as they talk about cutting taxes and spending less it seems to be the repulican party that spends the most.

Submitted by rnen on August 30, 2008 - 9:31am.

Gandalf that is exactly how a lot us independents think about Obama... God help us all if he becomes president. He is the candidate for those who let emotion dominate their thinking and do not have the ability to think critically.

Amazing that you would bring up experience while supporting Obama.

Submitted by gandalf on August 30, 2008 - 9:47am.

Wow. Talk about emotion.

In 2005, the woman was a mayor of a town of 9,000 people. There are 50,000 people in Santee.

Barack Obama is a US Constitutional Law professor, served in the United States Senate and sat on the Foreign Relations Committee. HE ACTUALLY HAS A POSITION on Al Quaeda and the Iraq war. Throw in Joe Biden who is seriously knowledgable when it comes to foreign policy and respected across the aisle.

republicans are the village idiots. You did it to yourselves. Enjoy democrats for the next 20 years. Your own damn fault.

Submitted by patb on August 30, 2008 - 9:56am.

I am a democrat but not a strong obama guy.
I think he did an amazing organizing job, and won the primary.

So maybe Obama should play palin in a couple games of hoops.
Let's see who has got game. I seem to recall the various
rabid republicans criticizing Obama for shooting some hoops
with the soldiers, so he's got game.

So Palin was a BA Journalism grad at U Idaho.
She was on the wasilla city council for 8 years and then
was part time mayor for 6.

Then she won the GOP Primary for a very underpopulated state,
2 years ago.

she's reported to have wrecked the finances of Wasilla.
she's reported to have wrecked the wasilla schools.
She's trying to wreck alaskan wildlife.

Obama, lets see

Harvard Law Grad on a scholarship.

Right on the war.

I watched James Carville on Larry King last night. He said that the McCain team believes that Alaska's proximity to Russia gives Palin "foreign policy experience." If that's true, all I can say is "WOW."

If McCain is trying to win over Hillary voters, Palin is NOT the answer. She's waaaaay too conservative. From what I understand, she is anti-gay, pro-life and pro-gun.

Liberal Hillary supporters will never go for that.

I think Palin will appeal to blue collar workers and people like my former neighbors in the Upper Midwest who would never, EVER vote for a black person, will think Mr. Palin's snow machine prowess is cool, and love the photos of a rifle- toting Governor Palin.

It will be interesting to see how Saturday Night Live skewers Gov. Palin. I can already the see skits featuring Tina Fey as Palin!

I'm looking forward to the debates. McCain vs. Obama will be predictable...but Biden vs. Palin will be pure entertainment!

Obama told Americans their “dreams can be one” if they unite in a stirring new crusade for change, in a riotous finale to the historic Democratic National Convention.
And when we say “incredible” we mean it literally. Let’s review.

First, about his claims about his background:

He likes to leave out the part that he attended the "hippie" Occidental College. We also have never been given access to Mr. Obama’s grade transcripts, nor any of his writing such as his senior thesis.

His campaign claims Obama worked as “social worker” when he did not. And in fact, he was a “community organizer” for only three years — not for the six years that is implied here.

Mr. Obama wrote only one legal piece at Harvard, which was only recently dug up. Which would tend to indicate his position as President of the Law Review was strictly an affirmative action decision.

Did Mr. Obama actually ever practice as a lawyer? In which state did he pass the bar exam? There is no record of him ever having had a case. And Mr. Obama was only a visiting lecturer at the University Of Chicago.

All of the records of Mr. Obama’s days in the Illinois state house have disappeared. Why is that?

As for his platform:
He intends to “intensify” the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan? Does the rest of his party know this?

And how can you do that when at the same time withdrawing from Iraq? If the problem is that the terrorists have safe havens in regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan, won’t making Iraq a safe haven be disastrous?

And never mind that the savings from ending the war on terror were supposed to fund all of his other promised programs.

The US has been negotiating with Syria, North Korea. As for Cuba, Mr. Obama has elsewhere promised to strengthen the sanctions against Cuba, rather than relax them.

Mr. Obama’s pledge to honor the Kyoto protocol would be a disaster for our economy.

It is for all intents and purposes impossible to lower taxes any further for the poor, since they have long since stopped being taxed and are instead given money under the guise of the earned income credit and other tax programs.

He is going to introduce a system of universal health care by lowering taxes — especially for small business.

He promises to restore the leadership of the US in space, having hitherto promised to kill NASA to fund his other programs like healthcare.

He promises to improve education for children of poor families. All of the other programs to that end having worked so spectacularly well.

He promises to combat poverty in the world by taxing us more and giving the money to foreign countries, many of whom seek to destroy us.

He promises to give illegal aliens amnesty.

What a candidate. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps this is unfair but she strikes me as the female version of Clarence Thomas.

This passing thought was buttressed when she referenced Ferraro and Clinton.

I am a liberal who really likes McCain. I would vote for him were I not taken with another candidate. While I made that other thread as snarky joke, I don't have much of any real opinion about her competence.

I just don't know enough about her.

I would like to like her. I don't like to think that McCain is dumb or pandering.

So, can someone on the right here sum up what makes her compelling to you?

Not a manifesto. Just what makes her desirable and or strategically beneficial.

Submitted by gandalf on August 30, 2008 - 10:49am.

Palin's greatest attribute? Definitely her face. Followed in close second by her boobs. What a pleasure to look at. Can't wait for the debates. Neither can Joe Biden! You know it's true, fellas.

She also took on the republican establishment in Alaska. I admire her for that. That's why her approval rating is high in Alaska. She killed the bridge to nowhere that made republicans and Ted Stevens and Alaska the laughingstock of the country.

I would seriously be considering McCain right now had he done the same thing these past 12 months. Instead, he ran a suck-up, pro-bush Karl Rove attack campaign and made hot man-love to James Dobson and the evangelicals along the way.

Is McCain going to last four years? Palin ends up President if McCain gets elected. McCain's 72 years-old. He's had four episodes of cancer and is showing signs of early dementia. I really suspect his health is in trouble.

to ex-sd:

Occidental:
He transferred out to go to Columbia. While less of an undergrad-focused school, wouldn't anybody prefer to go to Columbia?

Being a lawyer:
He was a summer associate (basically an intern) at 2 firms. Sidley Austin and Hopkins Sutter. As such he was probably in a support position under partner attorneys. I am assuming that last part because that is how it generally is in CA. I don't know if he ever took the bar (I don't think Bill Clinton did either). Following law school he focused on legal academia.

Regarding Harvard Law Review:
I seem to recall that there is a writing competition and debate to get selected for this. His becoming president (I think) involved winning over the conservative members whose consent he would need. I don't think it was a quota.

Regarding legal teaching:
Visiting lecturer is the term (at least in CA) to describe an entry level (as opposed to tenured) teacher (as opposed to a researcher).

Regarding the missing record:
I have heard this before. I have an easy time finding reports on his voting in Illinois. Can someone explain what this whole missing records story is about?
Also, here is a news story about his voting:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/1...

Regarding the intensification of the anti-terror campaign:
Yeah we know that. He said it at the convention.

Regarding the rest of the platform:
Yeah we pretty much know the rest of that too. Most of us support it.

She is at least as qualified as Obama who has done nothing to show anyone that we should have any confidence in him to lead the country through tough times.

C'mon, UR. Politics aside, she *is* good-looking. You agree? C'mon, even the women would agree with me. She's a hottie. Looks aside, I think she's done some interesting things related to GOP corruption in Alaska.

Actually, Obama's position at UChicago was definitely not entry-level. He was offered tenure twice, and declined both times. The Senior Lecturer classification is held by senior faculty who teach at the law school but hold full-time careers in the outside world (eg. federal judges).

http://www.factcheck.org/askfactcheck/wa...

Speaking of federal judges, Obama was recruited to the University of Chicago by a conservative federal judge appointed by Bush Senior. UChicago is one of the most conservative schools in the country.

All these Obama's blah-blah liberal types basically don't know what their talking about. Bunch of red-state blue-state baby boomers with tired-old, worn-out labels. Time for them to retire.

My take: Romney and Pawlenty were asked first, but they backed out after Obama's speech. They saw the writing on the wall, leaving McCain with no choice but to go all in with this pick.

If that didn't happen, then Romney and Pawlenty got taken for a ride, not to mention all of the QUALIFIED Republicans who got passed over. Ridge, Kay Bailey, Snowe, etc. And you thought the Democrats were divided? Should make for an interesting convention.

Ferraro was also added as a hail mary pick. That didn't pan out too well, and if history is any indication, this pick won't either.

I've seen a lot of racks in my time, and those certainly look store bought to me.

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

Wasilla.jpgWasilla.jpg
(Picture of Wasilla)

Mudflats Blog: "What is McCain Thinking? One Alaskan’s Perspective."
http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/08/29...

"Before her meteoric rise to political success as governor, just two short years ago Sarah Palin was the mayor of Wasilla. I had a good chuckle at MSN.com’s claim that she had been the mayor of “Wasilla City”. It is not a city. Just Wasilla. Wasilla is the heart of the Alaska “Bible belt” and Sarah was raised amongst the tribe that believes creationism should be taught in our public schools, homosexuality is a sin, and life begins at conception. She’s a gun-toting, hang ‘em high conservative..."

"Above is a picture of lovely downtown Wasilla, for those of you unfamiliar with the area. Behind the Mug-Shot Saloon (the first bar I visited when I moved to Alaska long ago) is a little strip mall. There are street signs in Wasilla with bullet holes in them. Wasilla has a population of about 5500 people, and 1979 occupied housing units. This is where your potential Vice President was two short years ago. Can you imagine her negotiating a nuclear non-proliferation treaty? Discussing foreign policy? Understanding non-Alaskan issues? Frankly, I don’t even know if she’s ever been out of the country. She may ‘get’ Alaska, but there are only a half a million people here. Don’t get me wrong….I love Alaska with all my heart. I’m just saying."

Gandalf, I hate to sound so gullible, but is that photo really of Sarah Palin? Unbelievable.

Submitted by Shadowfax on August 30, 2008 - 7:15pm.

Wow, I didn't realize Alaska got enough sun (or warm days) to 1) wear a bikini or 2) get a tan. I guess she can be eye-candy if nothing else.

As a woman, I would not be swayed by this pick if I were a Hillary supporter.

As for the continuous misrepresentations/lies about Obama's credentials, background, education, experience, I can't keep posting the "facts" to refute the lies. As for comparison of their respective experience, I honestly can't see this woman running our country. As a feminist, I wish I could, but I just can't. She is unimpressive and the experiences of running Podunk, Alaska (it's only daylight 6 months a year, what is there to govern?) is laughable.

Did anyone else notice John-boy staring at Sarah's rack while he was introducing her as his Veep selection? Too funny...

OMG, Palin's 17 year-old daughter is pregnant?

Are you kidding me?

She's running on family values and her kid's having a teen pregnancy out of wedlock?

These people aren't even adults.

Who's the father? Are we talking statutory rape here? I want DNA testing too. Who's the FATHER? You never know with these fundamentalist types.

The whole GOP thing isn't even funny anymore. It's scary, and pathetic, and somewhat disgusting.

Submitted by afx114 on September 1, 2008 - 11:34am.

While the hypocrisy is amazing, the pro-lifers will see this as an affirmation of her pro-life position. To them it's honorable that she's keeping the kid, rather than murdering it like those damn secular librulz. Never mind the fact that this destroys her abstinence-only and family-values positions.

You have to remember that most pro-lifers are one-issue voters, and this just strengthens her position with them.
