OT- iPhone question 16, 32 or 64User Forum Topic
Submitted by sdrealtor on June 15, 2012 - 11:19am
My son just graduated 6th grade and I'm gonna get him one as a graduation present. (Damn!!! I dont even have one myself). So whats the case for how much memory to get? Mostly he just texts, calls, surfs net and downloads/plays games. Doesnt have a huge music or picture/video library. Is 16G adequate or do I get him room to grow into? Thx in advance for any suggestions and comments including WTF does he need one for.

16G works for me, but I'm not a digital packrat, at least not on mobile devices.
I'd seriously consider an Android device -- they've got a lot better over the past year, without the asinine restrictions that Apple cripples their phones with.
trader. How can you do this to me? Get an android phone.
16gb is fine. He'll probably end up storing most stuff in the clouds anyway.
Storing in the cloud makes sense for music and other stuff that's been published, but he should be taught from a young age that personal info stays personal. And slapped down hard if it doesn't.
Cloud for personal info = privacy theft. Once it's out there, it's not easily removed.
This being said, I use basically no cloud services other than e-mail (buy CDs or download my music directly), and 16GB on a smartphone is plenty for me.

Sorry call me benedict realtor but the iPhone is the coolest by a million times according to my son.
Its like sending Hydrox cookies in your kids lunchbox and telling him they are the same as Oreos.
If personality cults are cool, then YIPPEE!
The answer is simple.
If you are a tinkerer, love rebuilding and reloading your operating system, don't mind hackerish interfaces and command line level on your PC or Mac, then Android.
If you want something that simply works, iPhone.
Either will come with Mama phone company's restrictions until you strip them, so unless you're going to go and strip them or have an known Android app you want, K.I.S.S.
And Apple did K.I.S.S. very well with the iPhone.
Now, go by an iPhone, because I own stock.
If the kid likes to tinker at all, encourage it and get him an Android device. It will do him good in future to cultivate his tinkering.

spdrun, you don't need to lecture me on security. You can search my comments about that here too (afterall, I am a paranoid person).
Cloud service for pictures is not nearly as an issue as sending PII over email which can remain on mail servers and in between hops. And yet people still send sensitive data via email.
And I use to be one who had all my finance data on a computer that had absolutely no internet connection. I'm not nearly as backassward these days because chances are institutions do a much lousier job safeguarding your PII than you do. But that being said, do a search for credit freeze. That helps out.
You get bonus points though in my book for liking supporting android though.
Dude, you're sounding cooler by the minute.
I would suggest that you wait...
The iPhone 5 is rumored to be close to release.
Then he will have the coolest...

sdrealtor... You know. screw the iphone5...
I'd say go retro and get a piece of history.
Only costs Three hundred seventy five thousand.
Apple I auctions for $375k

Pssss sdrealtor. I still have my Apple IIe.. It's fully working with three 5.25" floppy drive...a whopping 128KB ram, 80 column text card, and ImageWriter I printer....
I'm not greedy. Only asking for half of what was sold at Sotheby's.
I got the Mac SE/30 that is working too, if you're interested in that too...
The way I look at it... Anyone can get an iPhone 1,2,3,4,5...But how many peoplare really going to have a piece of and Apple IIe or the original Macs in the the fishtank box?
Hey, maybe I can get cynaogen mod/Android to run on the SE/30...Just need a bigger harddrive...Damnit, I need to find a scsi drive.
He didnt want to wait and didnt care about the iPhone5. Mistake in my book and I'm waiting. But thats what he wants and he busted his butt in school and deserves to be rewarded. He now has his iPhone. Congrations sdr.jr

I still have the Quadra 610 DOS Compatible (circa 1994 in mint condition) completely "maxed out" with all components incl ultra-wide SCSI and 14" Apple Display (Sony Trinitron). Runs up to System 8. All very heavy duty. Also have two extremely reliable SCSI drives, one LaCie 2GB and one Fujitsu 17GB (NOT selling - still in operation).
Believe it or not, I paid nearly $4K for all (incl software)!
Eat your heart out, Piggs!
Already ordered him a case online. The crooks at Verizon wanted $35 for a plain black case. I got him a way cool Minecraft case for less than half of that.
cdma eng is right about LTE. Very impressive on my iPad3.
You could have talked to my friend. I know someone that imports those cases. Also get an invisible shield.

Right now the network load is light... Lets see what happens when the iPhone5 comes out...

Got the invisible shield already. Needed to order case asap. He's not shall we say patient and I dont want him dropping it. It was only about $12 with free shipping so I just went for it. Those $35 cases from the carriers are such a rip off.
Those invisible shields suck, IMO. They change the tactile feel and optics of the screen.
Make sure you get the correct kind. Not the cheapo kind.
BTW: if you phone has gorilla glass, you don't need it.
I forget what the iphone 4 has.

Nope... Wife has one on the Sprint network... With gorrilla glass... She dropped and it shattered... She dropped it right on the corner...

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant. It's not shatter proof. A screen protector will prevent scratches on the screen, but it would not have protected the screen from shattering even if it was on and your wife dropped it the same way.
If you happen to put your phone in the same pocket as your keys, with your keys rubbing back and forth on the screen, you need screen protector if it's not gorilla glass.
The nexus S that I have I've thoroughly abused without a screen protector. It does not have any scratches on the glass. The galaxy nexus that I also have I've also abused has scratches on the screen.

You mean he doesn't want to have more than one color, and he doesn't want the one with the hello kitty on it? Oh, yeah, sorry. Wrong gender.
