the problem here is this is a gradual process over the last 50 years. things are gradually getting larger and larger, so we the consumers don’t notice any difference. a serving of fries gradually grew from 2.4 oz to 7 oz over 50 years. so that now 7 oz is “expected” by the consumer. a regular drink of yesteryear now is a “small,” whereas a regular hamburger is now standard for “kid’s meal.”
how did this happen? evolution through competition. as the food industry engage in competition for our dollars, they have found that by increasing portions, they capture our dollars.
as the plates got bigger and bigger, America got bigger and bigger. But never fear, the clothing industry made sure the public would not feel too badly about this. just as your plate has grew by 40-50%, your clothing size has changed inversely. a dress size of “12” back in the 50’s has evolved into a very respectable and comforting “5”.
but the BMI doesn’t lie, and that’s the bottom line. America is now 50% fatter than back in the 50’s. you do the math, 50% increase in portion size, 50% increase in weight.
in essence THIS IS EVOLUTION. a dominate animal in an environment will gradually get larger as it eliminates all other competition for food. think back to the dinosaurs? how did they get so big? animals by nature do not have a genetic stopping point when it comes to food. we will continue to eat because evolution tells us we need to keep eating, because in general larger animals are bigger and stronger and have survival advantages.
except when sudden climate change hits, the large ones just die off and the rodents take over.
