I mean is that even a state?

Is he trying to sneak in a Canadian on us?

Submitted by svelte on August 29, 2008 - 8:51am.

lol.

It's a very calculated move. He's still trying to coax Hillary supporters over and took on a sidekick that has virtually no track record - gives the Dems almost nothing to pick apart.

But - to bring someone on who is currently under investigation? That leaves me a little astounded.

She'd be a refreshing change after Dick Cheney. Nice smile too.

But isn't it too obvious that John McSame is pandering to women?

Submitted by Ex-SD on August 29, 2008 - 8:57am.

The Dem's should feel very comfortable with her since she's under investigation. Wasn't that one of the highlights of the entire Clinton reign?

Yes, and that was the reason many Republicans gave for disliking him. What will those same folks say now??

Next thing we know, McCain suffers an untimely demise (maybe a stroke, or the return of skin cancer), and Obama goes head to head with her in Nov.

Interesting choice, but smells a bit gimicky to me. It seems that the hardline right is having a significant influence on McCain's campaign - not much of the maverick seems to be left. Yes, she's a woman, but she's anti-abortion, anti-science (pro-creationism), card-carrying NRA member, connections to big oil - she really tows the line of the traditional conservative ideology. If he was a true maverick he would have challenged the hardliners and chosen Ridge or Lieberman. Ridge would have been a strong pick, it's just too bad he didn't pass the abortion litmus test.

I also think the PUMAs are largely a media creation, and Palin won't have much of an effect on woman voters.

Word is that she's a "hockey mom" - so I gotta give her some props there. I love me some hockey!

Submitted by sfexporter on August 29, 2008 - 9:31am.

Great Choice! The very old old man just give me another reason to vote for the Dems. I hope this gimmick backfires on him...I bet this is just another plot to get a younger woman "under" him ;-)

After I wrote my first comment I read the whole press announcement. She's bright and courageous. She refused to terminate her pregnancy after she learned her child would have Down symdrome. In Alaska, she run against her own party's corrupt machinery and won. She voted down pork barrel spending in her own state. I don't agree with her politics, but I have great respect for her.

If your maturity level is that of a immature teenager I suppose this post and comments so far could be witty.

I dislike using cultural nomenclature, occasionally it is apt particularly to the political leanings of the recent posters.

Bigotry in any form is at best, tiresome. The political bigotry of the "left" or "liberal" oriented that is so often espoused here is particularly vacuous and unnecessarily nasty.

Yes sdnativeson,

You actually have a good point here (though you really take yourself far too seriously; don't worry, we'll fix that for you).
As someone who grew up in the SF area, I have found the most irksome hypocrisy to be that which is tinged with self-righteousness. Writ large (and yes this is a broad generalization) the feeling among many in the left is that we are enlightened. This is amplified in places (geographic or otherwise) where there are more of us. Unfortunately, that often blinds us to our own stupidity. Ignorance of one's own faults often opens the door to all manner of dumb extremism (sort of the left version of the stupidity after 9/11) For example, there is nothing funnier than someone who owns a Lexus describing the need to move to a barter economy and complaining how conservative southerners are ignorant. Its like a study in situational irony. This actually is a description of a conversation I had a couple years ago with a relative. Steinbeck could not have written it better.

I actually like her.

Sure it's a shameless ploy by the Republicans to gain Hillary supporters, but welcome to politics.

But again, I like her. She's so new to politics she's not corrupted by it. Her parents were teachers, she actually has real values, and she can probably relate better to the average American than 99.9% of any other brainwashed, over-lobbied, disconnected pompous fat-cat politician.

I'd actually rather see her be president than McCain, Obama or Biden.

Submitted by urbanrealtor on August 29, 2008 - 3:41pm.

I don't say this to be crass, but considering the age of McCain, it may be that you get to see her be president.

If that happens, lets hope she is worth her salt.

Hey she can continue Cheney's habit of firing people they dont agree with. Its almost like Cheney's third term. I can see it now. Palin leaks CIA operatives name, etc, etc, etc ......

Aecetia--

It's not gonna work. How many female middle-aged former Hillary supporters like me would cross the line to vote for the antithesis of Hillary? Sarah is anti-abortion, anti-gay, and a creationist. I am pissed that the McCain people are insulting us. Many of us on this board have probably seen my sentiments expressed by other women on other boards today? Even my very elderly father, a strict Goldwater Repub, was horrified by the news this morning. He's going to write in someone else (I don't know who).

Kind regards because of our genial PMs of the past.

TuVu -

Couldn't agree more. If they did this to motivate the Christian conservatives out of their houses come November, I'll buy it. If they truly thought they were going to get female Hillary supporters just by putting a woman on the ticket, they are even more stupid than I thought. And truly insulting to women - that they will vote for a woman just because she is a woman. As if women don't know anything about issues and the candidates positions on them.

Better than Lieberman.

Submitted by Aecetia on August 29, 2008 - 8:24pm.

TuVu,

Even as a Republican I was pleased when Ferraro was named because I thought it was about time. Hillary showed amazing strength throughout a grueling campaign fought well against a media darling. It's all political and someone as astute as you should not be surprised by any of it. I think Palin will poll equally well with conservatives of both sexes because of her "frontier spirit". This should really make for an interesting campaign with the two old guys and the two young people. Let the games begin!

Great VP choice, it solidifies the base, and expands appeal to some untapped demographics. Looking at the H. Clinton message boards, many of Hil’s supporters felt they were told to sit down by the DNC, and consider this the true ticket of change. 90% of the posters in the HC forums on this topic were moved by the pick of Palin and her introduction, and are switching from indy and dem to this ticket!

Lots of Americans make their decisions based on anything but issues or capabilities of candidates. Sex, skin color, etc. This is a perfect example. Obama and Clinton have almost identical platforms. Clinton and McCain have nothing in common. Yet, there are people who'd vote for Clinton over McCain but for McCain over Obama.

It is a quote from a blog. I should have put it in quotes. I am sure there will be plenty of polls out tomorrow to see how this plays with the citizens.

Another point: If you want to use the 'executive experience is more important than legislative experience' argument, then by your reasoning Palin is more experienced than John McCain. McCain has been nothing but a Congressman and Senator.

So I have a question for those of you who are using this argument: Is Palin more experienced than McCain to be Commander in Chief? If so, why isn't she at the top of the ticket?

LOL have you heard this one???

Teen daughter of GOP VP pick is pregnant

Bristol Palin, the 17-year-old daughter of Sarah Palin, is pregnant and will keep the baby and marry the father, a senior aide to Sen. John McCain confirmed to CNN Tuesday.

... The 17-year-old, a senior in high school, is about five months along, in her second trimester, according to the aide.

That's what happens when you have abstinence-only education - shotgun weddings and pregnant teens.

Submitted by Russell on September 1, 2008 - 11:16am.

In honor of true conservative values she will not be applying for social benefits and the family says that this should be the norm. Even for girls who come from broken and destitute families who similiarly value getting pregnant at 17. It is all about "choice" after all.

No, that's what happens when you have four kids, you're pregnant with the fifth, and you're trying to do a decent job as a governor of a big state.

Hold on, what benefits? Her income as a governor should disqualify her household from getting any social benefits by a large margin.

Makes you wonder how she'll perform when she has 5 kids, 1 grandkid, is President of the United States, and Putin is breathing down her neck.
