OT - Google Voice is very coolUser Forum Topic
Submitted by briansd1 on October 19, 2009 - 12:14pm
It seems like we have some telecom people here. Have you guys used Google Voice? Very cool. I now get free calling to Canada. I've set Google Voice for free long distance calling for some relatives and friends. The international rates are still a little high (compared to calling cards). With Google Voice, you can just have a basic AT&T land-line. No need to pay for a long distance calling plan. And if you used the cell phone primarily for long distance, you can get rid of that too.

The coolest feature is that you can use your google voice number as a proxy to other phones...which allows you to easily block unwanted callers and send them to /dev/null.
I really wish I'd had this before I gave my cell phone number to the crappy and shady home improvement company who's telemarketers call me almost non-stop.
GOOG-411 is also a great service.
No need to use 411 from your cell phone and pay the carrier.
On your cell phone, just dial 800-GOOG-411. It just costs you some minutes out of your allocated monthly bucket. Of course, that works on the home phone as well.
I noticed that women are very impulsive about the use of 411. When they need some info, they will forget about the very high cost of directory assistance.
Yes, the redirect function is great - this way my number will always stay the same no matter what carrier I switch to (company phone) and I can still give my "real" cell number only to the people I want to have it. Also, the voice mail to text works surprisingly well. I usually can figure out what the message is without having to listen to it.
Can someone send me an invite for google voice? jennifer1234 at gmail.com.
Thanks.
Jennifer, you sign up yourself for an invite.
Put in your email and Google sends you an invite some weeks later.

Done that already. But was hoping to get one sooner.
Thanks anyway.
Jennifer, you can bid on ebay if you want one instantly.

It works fine for my elderly dad on his land-line. I just program the numbers on his phone for autodial and he can dial anywhere for free.
No need for monthly calling plan.
