OT: Does anyone use Facebook or Twitter to promote business?

The marketing people that we hired to promote our website said that they're going to mainly publicize through internet sites such as these. I have no idea what that means. They're not talking about spamming are they? Does anyone here have any experience promoting business through these sites?

I actually own an Internet Marketing Company. Facebook and Twitter are vastly overrated imo in regards to marketing a business. These tools can be harnessed if your business model has a community built around it (most do not).
