OT: Contemporary Home BarUser Forum Topic
Submitted by svelte on May 2, 2010 - 12:20pm
As with many other households recently, we've decided our dining room table is a waste of space. We have decided to replace it with a contemporary bar, which will work well due to proximity to the family room. Rough specs are: A translucent lit bar top would be excellent, something along the lines of this (except much smaller, naturally): http://www.fosi.com/gallery/bartop.htm A solid bar top with lit bar side panels would also work...example: http://z.about.com/d/hotels/1/0/P/T/2/wa... We've googled for several hours over the last few weeks, but the only one we've found so far costs $6K-8K and must be shipped from Europe. That's way more money that we want to spend. We'd really like to find something in southern Calif that we could go look at, but if you could point us to something on the net that would work too. Ideas?

For resale value I'm not sure its a great idea.
Can I come over when you are done?
We're looking for a portable bar, not a built-in bar...I should have stated that. The links I sent were indeed misleading.
And sure, you're more than welcome to come over for a drink!
When I saw wet bars in homes I was considering... i often laughed. They just seem so lame to me. So 1980's (1960's?). But it's your life. Do what makes you happpy... but don't forget to budget for the disco ball, hanging decorator beads, lots of red velvet anything, some zebra striped fabric, black light, hatch cover coffee table with shells lacquered into it... and slide a Johnny Walker high-ball on the rocks down my way.

Funny, I thought the same thing when I saw a pool with a rock grotto!! :-)
Yeah good point. But that crashing water drowns out my Lawrence Welk 8-Tracks. ;)

...dropping needle on BeeGees album... slipping on platform shoes.
Definitely go with the translucent underlit top. Very cool!
I like the way Garcia's restaurant in Encinitas (on Encinitas Blvd.) did their bar, just in case you're looking for more ideas.
Have you thought of building your own bar? You could get really creative and have fun with it! :)

Yes, I'm getting frustrated in my search so I am indeed circling around the idea of building my own. I think it would be fun!
Besides, the more I think about it, the more set I'm getting about the design. And I have no idea why, but even simple run-of-the-mill bars are expensive. I think I could build my own for less money actually...I'll stop by Garcia's next weekend to take a peek at theirs, thanks for the idea.
And no problem Ox...maybe since I missed all the adult fun of the 1960s wifey and I are trying to recreate it now.
Besides, I just spent the weekend at furniture stores (looking at living room furniture) and I can tell you for sure that the contemporary-yet-1960s look is IN big time right now!
You could make a bar that is a bit more than a 'bar'. Place a large flat steel grill in the center.. almost Benihana's style (Mongolian grill) place cold plates or recessed cold well(booster box) to either side.
Has it really been 2 years?
After on-and-off research for apparently the last 24 months, we finally made a decision. We found a supplier that could make a bar top like the one shown here under "Christensen Shipyards":

It should arrive before the end of summer. Now I gotta build a bar to go under it...
can you post pix?
Which makes this the opportune time to ask the question: how do I do that?
I know HTML well enough to reference a pic at an external site, but how do I embed a pic in my post making that pic stored on piggington (without a URL)?

You have a few options.
1. You can click on the "Add image" button below the area where you type text, and then you can upload the image onto this website (the image size is limited, so you might have to reduce the size)...
Like this...
2. You can create a picasaweb public account, and just embed an html link to that public account...
I wish I had seen this thread back in 2010. We build stuff like that all the time here at the theater. I have one or two people that would love to build something like that (for a few bucks of course).

Wow, time really does fly!
You and Mrs. Svelte are having way too much fun since the kids have moved out. Good for you! :)
Oh geez flu. I never noticed that button before - I feel a little silly now!
Anyhow, here it is. We ordered one just like it, except the L runs the other way.

Well, I haven't built the base yet! Let us better think through the features we want in the base and if I decide it is beyond my skills, I'll drop you a note...

Thanks CA!
