When the International Olympic Committee voted against Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympics this morning -- after the President and First Lady flew to Copenhagen to push for it in person -- the Weekly Standard newsroom burst into applause.

"Cheers erupt at Weekly Standard world headquarters," wrote editor John McCormack in a post titled "Chicago Loses! Chicago Loses!"

The line was quickly removed, but ThinkProgress caught it in time and posted a screenshot of the post.

Honestly I could care less where they are held the Olympics are just not that compelling to me. I do get to watch some events like swimming or gymnastics once every four years, and those are good TV. I like the sprint events in track and some good basketball, but otherwise I can watch that stuff originating from Rio just as easily.

Nothing captures my attention as far as TV sports as a long Saturday watching great college football games. As long as those don't get exported or outsourced I'm cool. So while I am not going to stomp on the Obama/Oprah contingent, it was a FAIL, and I don't care. I won't hold it against them.

Also in general I think it's fair to say the Brazilians wanted it more, and given that they've never hosted one in SA, good for them.

I personally think it's awesome that we are not getting the Olympics here. More jobs for manual blue collar workers during Chicago's winters when those kind of jobs shrink?

Perhaps that is because Kansas City did not submit a bid to host the Olympics. Only seven cities submitted applications to host the 2016 games: Chicago, Madrid, Rio, Tokyo, Baku, Doha, and Prague.

Obama obviously did not talk to Peter Ueberroth nor read his book, "Made in America" where he would have learned of the incredible corruption of the IOC.

By the time Barack and Michelle's speeches were made, the venue was a closed issue.

After his UN presentation he must have thought the world was in his palm and wasn't expecting this royal embarrassment. It will be interesting to see how this affects future relations.

I agree with Arraya on this on. That is how it worked when Petco Park went in in San Diego. People who had bought up the old run down, warehouses, etc. did very well and they knew beforehand where to buy based on political connections.

I am annoyed by the Republican vs Democrat mud throwing. This is what the powers that be want all debate to be reduced from. This way they can pass whatever they want be merely being Democrat or Republican.. which ever the current party in power is.

If you noticed, Chicago pulled out all the stops in terms of celebrity schmoozing. Unfortunately, like any group that is enamored by celebrities, they forget that celebrity schmoozing does not replace content.. though it might help win the election.

The IOC wanted to know how Chicago would support the Olympics from a technical point of view, but Chicago had a bunch of celebrities glad-hand them... thats how Chicago ended up near the bottom. The Olympics are also supposed to rotate amongst participating nations.

IMHO gerrymandering is a big contributor to the radicalization of US politics. Most electing districts have been designed to ensure that one party is essentially guaranteed to win it. So instead of candidates persuing a moderate agenda that appeals to both democrats and republicans within thier district, they tend follow a partisan agenda designed to appeal to the most vocal and vigorous supporters in thier party: ie the radicals.

Having lived in Chicago, I can tell you that the corruption there s so rife, and so heavy-handed that it is in one's face all of the time.
