OT: Best place to sell car (private party)?

User Forum Topic

Hi,
What are some good places in San Diego to advertise/park a car for sale? I'm trying to sell mine, but I wanted to see where people have had success. I don't want to sell it back to the dealer, I'd rather sell to a private party.

What's worked for you?

Craigslist. It's free, and tons of buyers look there. It worked for me.

I have used Auto Trader and the UT.
UT seems much better, and is cheaper.

Craiglist is free so do that for sure.
Also, try the SD reader. Some of their classifieds are free or dirt cheap.

I had great success using www.cars.com listing service. This was about two years ago.

Craigslist is the way to go. Before listing it, go to Carmax for a cash offer that is good for a specified period of time (I think its 7 days or 300 miles). I would recommend getting the Carmax offer and using that to counter any offers you get on Craigslist. It's good to have in case people want to dicker with you on price. I have found Carmax's offers to be more than fair, often much higher than a dealer trade-in offer. And you don't have to smog before selling.

It depends on the car. I think craigslist is best for cars under $10,000, Classic Trader for classics, and traderpub.com was better for higher priced cars. But it has been about two years since I have sold a car. Get advise from people that sold comparable cars to yours in the last 4-6 months. The auto market has really changed in that time.

I bought a new truck last year from dealer.. the dealer offered me 13k for my old one (which was paid off). I said no, went home posted it on Craigslist and took a nap.

20 minutes into my nap my cell phone rang, picked it up, guy said can I come look at it, I say yeah.. I go back to sleep thinking it was not a strong lead or something he didn't seem serious. About 1 hour later I hear someone knocking on the door.. I show him the truck he gives me $21000 cash and we're done. Craigslist!!

what j said. if you have uncommon car, autotrader will bring in people from all over socal, sold car to someone from Palm Springs and for cheap car, UT. CL can bring the superlow bids and you exclude people who dont waste time on PC.

I sold mine in November. Used craigslist. Sold in 3 days. Got $2k more than the dealer offered as a trade-in. Won't ever go with the dealer's trade-in.

Best to advertise it in your company's for sale listings, unless you have such a POS car that you would be embarrassed that a fellow coworker has the unfortunate luck of buying it :)

Depends on the type of vehicle at the moment - SUV values have tanked.

Thanks for all the advice...I will try craigslist and the reader first (since they are free and seem to get a high amount of traffic).

Maybe if that doesn't work I can take it to CarMax.

It is an SUV (Highlander), but since it is a 4 cylinder I get really good gas mileage - around 28 mpg.

Does CarMax buy all types of cars?
