OT: Best place to get eyewear?User Forum Topic
Submitted by Ricechex on March 30, 2009 - 8:44pm
Hi All, Over the years, I have been to Costco, and private optometrists, and have been unable to find a frame that is suitable. I am looking for a store that has a REALLY large selection of frames. Anywhere in SD, will drive. Any ideas?

My good friend owns Sunglass and Optical Warehouse. They have stores in Sports Arena, La Jolla and Convoy. I spent many years sailing with him. Good guys, honest shop, HUGE selection (both sunglasses and regular optica) and great prices.

FYI if you are looking for sunglasses the best are Maui Jim's. I have spent my life on the water and nothing comes close. And they offer their sunglass lenses in prescription (one of, if not THE, only).
Ditto on Sunglass and optical Warehouse. But sorry, Kaenon rules for shades.
You should be thankful lasik didn't permanently screw up your eyes like it did for some people i know.
Are you covered for vision under an insurance plan like VSP?
I know you mentioned costco already - but I use them - and I thought they had a decent selection of frames and their prices were incredible compared to the 2 other places I checked.
Not the biggest, but what I would consider a "choice" selection of frames, and an excellent selection of shades, is Plaza Optometry in the 99 Ranch Market center on Clairemont Mesa Blvd.
I have purchased frames and Maui Jim shades from them.
FLU - you have any stats/data on this ?
I tell people I will get Lasik when I have as much time to live as the technology has been around so I can see if any long-term effects will catch up to me.

No I do not have any data. I have a couple of friends' experiences (plural friends) scared me into not doing it (particularly since I have only 1 good eye).
I had one friend that had lasik done 3 times, and there was always some issue afterwards. I had another friend that had issues with night-time vision and it seems like it's still an issue, and a third friend that have since felt their eyes are itchy, irritable, dry (like having allergies), which never happened before the procedure.
I'm sure my friends are the exception then the rule, as I'm sure plenty of people can say they're lasik was just fine. But, I guess my vision isn't that bad to warrant me taking unnecessary risk. Folks tell me the risks and the bad cases are a small percentage of the total number done. Knowing my luck, I would fall into that small percentage.
never get a laser in your eyeball.
If you're looking for cool, distinctive, cheap specs, figure out whta size glasses work for you, then shop ebay. the prices are so cheap relative to crazy store markups you can buy many pair that dont work and do good just buying the pair that works, and easily resell the rejects. you need to know what sizes will work for you though. i have had luck on the bay.
I do not wear glasses except when I work on the computer and still passed the eye test, but my night vision was deteriorating. (I am old). I started drinking a juice supplement made from Acai berry and it definitely improved my night vision. It was mentioned the night bombing mission pilots used a similar derivative to improve their night vision. a am not pushing any particular product, but I thought I would mention the improvement. I have seen the acai berry juice at Sams and heard it is also at Costco. I am glad I did not have any eye surgery.
Thanks Everybody. Yes, Lasik was not what I hoped for...I figured since it was around 10+ years, the kinks were worked out. I had to get a touch up procedure done on one eye, and it is that same eye that is getting worse. I paid the big bucks for the specialist, rather than the eye banks, and so I had hoped for a longer lasting result. Oh well. I will try Sunglass Warehouse and also look on Ebay. Thanks much for the recommendations.
I had Lasik more than 10 years ago. For me, it was a good choice. My eyesight was truly horrible - about -7 in both eyes. I literally couldn't see anything more than about 2 feet away. I wore contacts for years and my eyes were always red and itchy. Glasses gave me headaches. Lasik has been great. No problems. Still 20/20 after all these years without any touchups.
Acai berry has a lot of antioxidants. Pilots used to eat bilberry to improve their vision, which also has antioxidants. Most fruits and vegetables with dark pigment (goji berry, blueberries, kale) are touted as "superfoods" as they have a high concentration of antioxidants which help scavenge free radicals in the body (reduce risk of cancer). They also help promote healthy ocular metabolism and reduce the risk of macular degeneration (leading cause of blindness in people over 55 in the US).
I just had LASIK a couple of months ago. Been seeing 15/20 since day one. My eyes start rejecting contacts after ~6-8 hrs of wear. Glasses is a PITA when you play sports. I never had any other issue besides dry eyes. The dryness only lasted about a month. It's much better now. I guess everyone heal differently, so it's a YMMV, depending on how well you heal.
I had LASIK 10 years past also. This thread made me realize how much I threw caution to the wind. I am normally very sceptical about anything to do with health. I really hated contacts and glasses. So far so good. I have not had a single negative symptom. The Doctor did say I was a very good candidate for the proceedure.Maybe they tell everyone that?

I had Lasik done in Feb 2001. The results have been below optimal, but overall, I'm glad I had the procedure done.
1. Background: I had myopia (shortsightedness), 5+ diopters in each eye, and I've always had one dominant eye.
2. I decided to have Lasik done on my non-dominant eye first, as a test. Since I don't use both eyes at the same time (something unusual, I know), I wouldn't get headaches from having only one eye corrected.
3. I had the surgery done by the head of the ophtalmology dept at UC Irvine; a guy in his 50s and a big shot in his field.
4. Post op: I couldn't see my computer screen very well. I panicked! When I see black letters on a white background, the white appears too bright, and the black not black enough.
5. My distance eyesight is great! I can drive without glasses, I can walk around, etc. BUT, when I work with a computer, I use glasses, so that my dominant (non operated) eye does the work. When driving or walking, the operated eye works. No problems so far (11 years).
6. The doc offered to do a touch-up procedure back then, but I declined. The less you mess with your cornea, the better, IMO.
7. To sum up, I use glasses for computer work, but otherwise I don't need them. I'm happy with the procedure b/c I'm free of glasses and contacts. It's been 11 years, and I haven't noticed any deterioration in my eyesight.
YMMV
I love Oliver Peoples for glasses. I'm blind as a bat and need reading glasses, computer glasses, and regular glasses. Oliver Peoples has stylish frames that aren't glitzy and don't have brands stamped on them. I think they're classic and attractive.
They have two lines: Oliver Peoples and Paul Smith. They run sales a few times a year and the prices are comparable to most other optics shops.
The other thing I like about Oliver Peoples is that they don't have millions of frames and they are very good are finding a frame to fit your face.
Worth a look.
