Moving (local)User Forum Topic

Piggs as a group are about money saving ideas it seems however lately I am really warming to the idea of paying someone to move us. The move isn't far, basically Birmingham to Poinsettia (Carlsbad), and I have a 1040 Sq. foot house and a garage with crap, but otherwise it isn't a whole lot. Still I don't relish the idea of dragging washer and dryer up stairs at the new place. Any recommendations? Some of the rates of folks on CL seem pretty reasonable. However I am not sure how much I'd trust someone found on there.

I used Manpower Moving for my last 2 moves. First experience was great, second was average. I paid between 400-500 each time to move a 3/2 about 5-10 miles.
I found it to be money well spent, and I'm a very 'thrifty' guy. Good luck!
hire 3 college kids.
I asked this same question a few months back:

I ended up using Reliable Man Movers and they did a good job. I would definitely recommend them.
Liability.
Getting a non-bonded/insured mover probably isn't a good idea in case he/she accidentally drops that picture tube or plasma on the asphalt (unless you were trying to get rid of it anyway).
Sullivan Moving Company
Used them twice (once for local and once for our move from Encinitas to Ojai)
They are awesome
Best movers we have ever moved with and we have moved 6 times in the last 6 years
Me again
Cardiff, Sullivan is out of Vista 760-599-2600
Ask for Dave Young if you call for a quote
:)
I found this company from the Chinese yellow pages. He does speak English.
Andy's moving Co
Tel: 858-229-7795
charges $90/hour. wrapped everything and no damages at all. we tried one of the typical commercial moving companies before and the amount of damage was unreal.
Thanks all. How much prep did you guys do on your own? Pack your own boxes and let them do just the big stuff or did they pack boxes also?
Last time we moved we used Discount Movers. They sent a team of three guys and a truck. They were hardworking and careful, very professional. I'd highly recommend them.
Best to wrap your own stuff, and to move anything particularly fragile yourself. If you get everything boxed up, two or three guys and a truck will only need a half day rental.
XBoxBoy
Packed all of our own stuff
You should get a quote for doing it both ways.
With the amount of time, energy, & money it can take getting boxes, tape, packing paper, etc and then packing, it can be worth it to have the movers do it all.
When I used Sullivan for a local move I think it was 3 guys and a truck for $130/hr with a 4 hour minimum. Also, however long it takes to drive from your current residence to your new home, that time will be doubled (don't ask me, standard for all movers in southern california)
That move came in at exactly 4 hours
yup, we packed our own boxes. we got an estimate from one of those professional companies that pack everything in the past and it was well over $5000. you do your own packing and have everything ready for the movers and that cost drops down to ~$500.
be very careful of the moving industry - once they have your stuff your at their mercy....
I think it's called hostage freight or something like that...
get a full contract up front, no estimates which can be changed.
Pack your own stuff, especially anything expensive.
Here is a link to a great site, almost too much info, but explains about everything. This is the link to the superlist, about 2/3 of the way down on the first page u will see San Diego.

We used Discount Movers last time and it was a nightmare. They forgot to show up. Then they sent a crew later that afternoon. The guys were worn out so it was 11:30p.m. by the time they finished. It ended up costing us a lot more time and money than it should have.

Never move without them.
Seriously. I have friends who were scammed on a move. A moving company back in Chicago made me aware of moving scam. Told me to check out whomever I choose.

Local move you probably won't have an issue because it's a point to point move done over 1 day (1/2 day more like it). Pretty hard for a company to hold your stuff hostage for a local move.
The site I linked to, sort of has a misleading name. It is not just about scam companies, but provides a ton of detailed info about moving and also has personal opinions of a lot of companies from people who used a company listed on the site and took time to give feedback. It is a great starting point.
