McDonald's is now charging 59 cents for extra sauces when you order items like chicken nuggets. Why?? Like they'd ever go out of business or not turn a profit.

Sign of the times? Or corporate greed? I vote corporate greed.

It's called inflation. Their cost are going up, but they tried their best to not past on the cost unless they really have to. It's kind of like airline charging $15/bag. They can very well just past the cost to you with increase in airfare or burger, but they try not to. If you don't believe me, try running your own fast food place and you'll see how much it cost for those condiments and how many customers just waste it like it doesn't cost anything.

How would you know this unless you eat at McDonalds?

Yeah, I get a craving every now and then and eat that junk. Asianautica, I was under the impression that MickyD's makes enough profit where they don't have to do this OR raise prices-well, right now at least.

What give you an impression that McDonald is making enough profit? First, they're independently owned, so it really up to the individual owner to determine whether they're making or losing $. It's not like McDonald going to keep on funding them if they lose $. Secondly, have you noticed the rising cost of everything these days? The cost of their bread, the grain to feed the cow, the diesel the truck use to deliver those ingredient to the store, the rise in minimum wage, etc. How can you even think they can absorb those cost?

I do love their new vanilla iced coffee better than starbucks....cheaper too!!!!

Yes, asianautica, I expect McDonald's to continue to absorb those costs. They're the "Golden Arches". They are supposed to serve fast food at cheap cost.

You're funny marion. I think you'd find it much cheaper @ the local soup kitchen. Otherwise, welcome to the real world where inflation happens.

article about McDonald's $1 menu

I was at a menu-planning meeting this weekend for a backpacking trip this summer - the leader had great advice about food on a 7+ day trip - for example, he recommended getting hot sauce packets from one of the fast food restaurants to spice up the dehydrated enchiladas

How many hiking trip planners, picnic planners, moms preparing for a car camping weekend, etc think that it is OK to stock up on these condiment packages?

Does the local franchise owner really have to provide free condiments for all of these people? I think not.

Go into a fast food restaurant in a low-income part of town. There are no condiment packs out where the customers can stock up on them and some of them don't even have napkins accessible.

Having to pay for extra condiment packets is actually an excellent example of the pervasiveness of inflation. EVERYTHING that we use and consume on a daily basis (except real estate) is going up in price.

Investors and speculators might give some thought to other times in the US when inflation was pervasive - which investments / speculations paid off and which didn't? (hint: got gold and silver?)

Yep, the us fed dollar was at record lows just a month ago. It's up a little bit this month. Expect prices to rise everywhere. I remember the early 80's...everything went up in price.

Back in the mid 80's I worked at a Wendy's in Pittsburgh. You would be amazed how low the profit margins are at individual fast food franchises. After everyone was paid, including employees, franchise fees, overhead, etc., our average monthly net profit for the store was around $400. I'm surprised it's taken this long to charge for condiments.
