I was not able to see if it was for sale lately. Last sale shows:
07/22/05 for $809,000.
Sold by Aijaz Quader to David L. Hermsen
So I did a little more checking. NOD filed 11/21/2007
Original Loan : $647,200.00
Default In.. : P&I 08/15/2007
Reinstate Date: 11/09/2007
Reinstate Amount: $11,384.00
I have a feeling this may be going back to the bank eventually (surprised it hasn't yet). Do you think this is one of those where he stops making payments for 6 months to a year, banks the mortgage, banks the rent and voila, instant cash. Easy money. And more stealth inventory.
Still, though, send an email to inquire and got this response - with typos - just copy and pasting here:

----- Sour grapes for everyone!
Jp, this is a scam. You mail this scam artist/sicko your deposit money and you'll never see it again.
He was posted out to "west Africa Nigeria". OMGoodness! Give me a break! Can you report this to Craigslist??
jpinpb,
I really like the parenthesis (assuming they are original to the text) where the scammer could fill in the blanks in his scam "form letter". Do you think MS Word offers this as a template when writing a letter these days?
FLU,
That was hilarious. How did you find that story? My husband is gonna love that one...he's the "geek" in the family, this is right up his alley. I love the on the ground recon. That story put a smile on my face for the week.
Doublewide
We should just nuke nigeria and be done with it.
Yes, marion, as soon as I got the email I determined it was a scam. Sad thing is yes, the parenthesis, probably many endless properties all over the U.S. that they're trying to fictitiously rent out and get money.
I did report it to CL, which is probably why it is no longer listed. I just wish there were some fraud department that would investigate it. There must be some IP address they can track down, mail a check and wait for them to pick it up and set them up, something.
I hate that they're ripping people off. Oh, wait a minute. That's what people buying these house have been doing all along, stealing from the bank and now not paying them. Nevermind. Situation normal. Scams abound.
FLU - I just read the Powerbook scam. That was brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!
check out www.ebolamonkeyman.com for more funny experiences with Nigerian scammers.
Enjoy
I'm tempted to send the guy monopoly money.
I've seen that exact template used before, even down to the "god fearing" part.
Thank you OC Renter for a little more research on it:

A few months ago while I was searching for a new place downtown I came across a rental that was too good to be true. I immediately expected it to be a scam as (1) it was well below market value, and (2) the required deposit was 2 1/2 months rent. What? Well, I had to inquire anyway, just to make sure, and got he following response below that I had to save for future reference, so here it is...
--Scam Email I received--
This is quite a long e-mail ,so, plese read it slowly and with attention, read it twice if you have to, i tried to explain the best as i could my proposal and things to be as clear as possible.
So, i am having second thoughts, i am not feeling comfortable just sending you the keys, sorry, nothing personal. I have noone there to show you the apartment because my parents are in France since i was 24 and my best friend is out of state.
I've contacted a company named ReMax. Their website is www.remax.com. They are a well known company all over the world, they have offices all over the world, they have an office in Athens, too. So, i went to their office in Athens and i told them that i have an apartment in San Diego and i want to rent it and they told me that they have a service i can use, i will describe it below. I accepted it, paid the fees and now all is needed is a possible tenant.
So, here is how it goes: first you must agree using the company, then I will contact the ReMax company and let them know you agreed using them, then they will send you an e-mail with all the instructions about how to proceed with the transaction, you then must send the money to the company, they'll put the money in their trust account, then i have to send you the keys, your money will be held there until after viewing, along with the keys i will fedex the proof of ownership and a leasing contract (it's a normal, standard contract), i will use FedEx-overnight and will provide the tracking number to you and to ReMax, you will have 5 days to go and see the apartment, if you decide to rent it you have to sign the lease, fedex-overnight it to me--keep a copy for yourself, notify ReMax that you accepted the apartment and they will release the money to me, if you dislike the apartment you have to notify ReMax and they will fully refund you, when you have the money in hands you will have to FedEx me the keys and provide me the tracking # (i pay the fees), you will also have to provide the tracking # to ReMax so they can track it too, when i receive the keys i will notify ReMax that i received it and the transaction is ended. The next step is to give me the OK to start this up with them and they'll contact you. Giving the circumstances i am sure you understand that this is the best way to handle the transaction.
I am sure you're asking yourself why would you deposit any money before seeing the apartment, but, again, under the circumstances this is the best way. Anyway, your money will be safe with ReMax and will be refunded if you decide not to rent the apartment.
I do not want to use a ReMax agent to show you the apartment or to whom you could give the money to because will involve realtor/broker fees and the fees are $1,600 which is huge. The service i've proposed above is much cheaper and i've paid the fees already.
Let me know your decision. Let me know please what you decide. E-mail me ASAP.
Thank you
Vivian
jp, too bad you're not looking in Temecula. I just moved into a new community that's extremely nice. :) Anyway, hope you find something soon. Nowadays, it's much safer to move into an apartment community while you wait for the bottom.
The next time someone gets a nigerian spam email from craiglist regarding rentals, we should put our collective minds together to figure out the best way to screw around with the scammer along the lines of the PPP powerbook prank. I'm thinking about stringing the guy/gal along view fedex overnights to different addresses. Or getting the spammer's fax number, and feeding a 8x14 paper halfway into a fax machine, taping the two ends together, and sending him/her a fax indefinitely.vSort of like screwing around with telemarketers by telling them "yes, I'm interested, but could you hold on for a minute", and then placing the telemarketer on hold indefinitely.
these Nigerians are probably LOL and ROFL over the fact that Americans are falling for them scam. that reason alone is probably why they continue to spend so much time working the net to push the scams.
This should be reported to a local FBI office. Pronto.
While it would be fun to mess with the CL poster, most people do not have the benefit of Pigg Intelligence.
Would be the good samaritan thing to do.
A while ago I got these "Nigerian" spam emails too asking me to contact them and send money to claim a big fund....etc.
I responded and ask them to contact me ASAP by phone so I could get the money by sending them the check....We emailed back and forth, I gave them one at a time several fake long distance phone numbers to call, first to me ASAP, then to my secretary, then to my mom and lawyer, each time with more urgency....The emails came back kept saying they tried several times but not able to reach the correct number.....
I hope those guys paid some long distant fee trying. Anyway, I had fun keeping them excited for nothing for a while.
I would have given them the phone number to my local FBI office.
These creeps end up scamming people - like older people, etc.
It's just a shame.
dharmagirl, that's actually a good idea. I didn't think of it at that time. At the time, I thought that their scam were pretty stupid and childish and wouldn't be able to convince anyone.
I have an online store, and used to get a few Nigerian scam e-mails every month. They would ask if they could buy thousands of dollars worth of product on a credit card, and out of the goodness of their heart, add another grand over the sales price. I've since added a note to my payment info page that says "we reserve the right to decline credit card orders from countries (Nigeria, for example) which encourage widespread credit card fraud."
I haven't gotten another e-mail since.
