You are hereby free to talk about football. I wont bore everyone with my analysis and gloating since there about five basketball fans on these boards. I will just say that this has been a great year, perhaps the best ever, my sports, my kids, my friends, my love life, I have been blessed in each area. So politics and finances have had a difficult year, stocks and investments could have gone better, who the hell cares, I wouldn't trade one mintute of the last twelve months.
Now if the chargers win the lombardi trophy, I will be convinced that it is my world and everyone else is just living in it.

I'm not normally a basketball watcher, but when I saw the overtime game the other night, Kobe's elbow to the jaw was more ruthless than I can imagine any CEO being. Not the kind of person I want my son looking up to!

Threadkiller, as someone who spends way too much time watching basketball, that elbow wasn't a big deal, that's just playoff basketball. Any veteran would have done the same, the defender ran into his space, he never moved his feet and he was wearing a defender from behind, the defender did it on purpose too, and flopped to the ground on purpose, that's just a strategy. If you had seen the any of the Denver series' or the Bulls/Celtics series this year (which was the best series I have seen in a decade), you would have vomited and put a blindfold on your kids. I think the bulls celtics games were averaging something like three players needing "in game" sideline stitches from the team doctor, my friends and I were making side wagers regarding flagrant fouls, facial bleeding, stitches, blood cleanup delays and ejections.
Lakers/Orlando was mild as far as most playoffs go, and never let anyone look up to sports stars, especially your kids, it's entertainment, that's all.

TG: I'm going to politely disagree with you on letting the kids look up to sports stars and due to one example. In my second year of coaching youth football (Pop Warner), we were invited to take our Mitey Mite team to perform against Murrieta during half time at a Chargers - Rams preseason game.
Before the game, all of the kids were allowed onto the field to watch the Chargers practice. The kids were allowed to meet the Chargers as they came off the field and two Chargers in particular are forever in my own "Hall of Fame": Drew Brees and Lorenzo Neal. Drew Brees made a point of shaking each kid's hand and Lorenzo Neal went from kid to kid saying, "This (youth football) is where it all starts; stick with it!". The look on each kid's face was priceless: A mixture of shyness, awe and pride.
So, for every stupid maggot like Michael Vick, or Allen Iverson or Manny Ramirez, you have Drew Brees, Lorenzo Neal and Peyton Manning (a friend of mine told me a very similar story about Peyton and my friend's Pop Warner team).
Of course, the icing on the cake will be watching Lorenzo Neal opening up holes for that Raider backfield this season!
And the football talk begins. Allan, I'll agree, there are great character people in all sports, I guess even on the Raiders. That kinda hurt to type.
TG: Took my son to Pop Warner weigh-in yesterday and got to meet the head coach of the Midget team (last division before they play high school ball) that I'll be defensive coordinator for. This is my favorite part of the year, dude. Within a month, we'll be in summer camp and then the fun starts.
I love all sports (well, except for curling), but this is really where my heart is at. Not to take anything away from baseball or basketball, but football is truly America's sport. Violence, aggression, women in skimpy clothing and alcohol. What's more American than that?

Here here Allan.
Well boys let the fun begin.
TG that layup kobe made where he flashed the lane, held up the ball in front of Howard, then floated and came down and threw it in before he landed definitely rivaled jordans right to left layup. In my opinion it was a much harder shot.
Anyways I am not saying for kids to look up to the guy, but damn he is great baller.
I remember when I was kid... Any sport we played... whiffle ball, hoops, tennis ball baseball, football... we ALWAYS emulated the pros... however I don't think we idolized or looked up to any of the players as role models. I think you guys know what I mean. I think it is perfectly healthy for my kids to pretend they are Kobe, or LT or even Ray Lewis (who literally has gotten away with being an accessory to murder) as long as that pretend is on the field of play.
As far as Kobe giving an elbow, Kobe is not any dirtier then any player in the league. Basketball is a physical game. It is fast, and one of the problems with it is that the same dimensions of the court have not changed since its inception. However the men who play it are WAY WAY WAY larger and faster then the men who originated the game. These guys are physical marvels and they are confined to a small space at a high speed. In the end it is all scoreboard baby.
Football it's still LL season for us coaches on the winning track!!! My team is still playing in CV having fun in Tournament of Champions and all-stars gets started this week.
Son will be 9th grade and starts morning workouts for speed and lifting work 4 days per week early AM. Also summer (loosely HS team) baseball 2 nights a week and Saturday practice. Should be busy summer. I think the weight training goes for two months before they can have real practice. I am not sure what the start date is.
Back to the Lake-show I suppose congrats. I wasn't pulling for anyone, but it's clear to me if Cleveland can get a little muscle and length Orlando can be had. You just have to get tough with Dwight, and have some length to defend the shooters. Why the Cavs had Lebron on Skip-to-my-Lou I have no idea.
Cardiff: Do you have any experience with Velocity's speed camp in Carlsbad? I'm looking to improve everything from running back burst to offensive line agility and I've heard some good things about these guys. I'm wondering if you've heard anything and, if so, what?
SDR: When I was a kid, I had a couple of heroes I followed: Mean Joe Greene and O.J. Simpson. Yup, old Orenthal James was one of my heroes. Go figure, huh? Proves your point, though.
Allen, I hear pretty good things about Velocity. For our team Doug Hix's crew (Playfast) works the kids out on-site.
LCC Pop Warner makes extensive use of that Velocity program. Another place you can check out that is in Vista, over just north of Rancho Carillo is Athlete's Edge. They seem to be more of an individual training site.

But none could hold a candle to the real Payton- Walter. A smile from Sweetness would melt the autumn snow in Soldier Field making way for his triumphant gallant to the end zone, invigorating the spirits of souls subject to the frozen wasteland.

I would have to disagree. MJ's right dunk to left layup had much more grace and much more hang time. It looked almost like he paused in the air, thought about the dunk, seeing that it'll be blocked, so he decided to change his mind and do a layup instead. All of that in one fluid motion. Kobe is an exceptional player, but he's still no MJ.

Ahhh I dont know AN. Mikes right to left was a drive through the lane and actually there was nobody contesting it. What I thought was happening is that Mike was losing altitude. Yes I think he was thinking of a right hand slam but was going to fall short of the rim so he switch hands and finger rolled it in. The fact that he had to finger roll it shows he was running out of hang time.
SD Realtor, unfortunately, I can't find the blog I saw this morning with a clip of both. MJ looked in that clip to have plenty of hang time, but changed his direction 1/2 way through the air as he saw an opponent coming up to interfere w/ his dunk. At least that's what MJ said in the recap of that game. But I could be wrong. Linky Look at 2:50 for that particular layup. He was in mid air, he saw one of the defender come up, so he changed his mind. That's how I see it, but I do see where you're coming from though w/ his finger roll.
debates about greatness can rage forever, they are different guys, different talents, different styles, we can appreciate them all without having to declare a winner. Even if Lebron ends with 20 rings, you can't take away MJ from my memory banks, nor Magic Johnson or Bird, the logo, or any of the others guys that were fun to watch and amazed us on the court, comparing all of them will make your head hurt. What is important is finding a way to keep Ariza in L.A. and preventing Phil from retiring, which I think is a strong possibility given his health.

TG: Phil gets even more respect from me for bagging the boss's daughter. Good on you, Zen Master!
TG: Hey! Can we talk about football now?

In 2000/2001 I was on top of the world:
Maryland won the NCAA tourney
The Ravens won the Superbowl and..
We had the World Heavyweight Champion Hasim "The Rock" Sharif Rahman
It was a great year...!
Orlando stunk the joint up - they looked awful.
Peeeeennnnnnguins!!!!!

Hey wait a minute- aren't you guys and gals supposed to be Clippers fans?
Are you asking if we like Supercuts?
Ha ha I laugh through my tears. I grew up in Oakland,Ca and so I am obligated to be a...Warriors fan.

Riddle:
What do Raiders fans in Oakland have in common with Lakers fan in L.A.?
Answer:
They're both good at burning down the city, whether their teams win or lose.
